Windhoek: The Windhoek High Court has sentenced Mechthilde Karomo to 35 years in prison for the murder of her boyfriend and another woman on 26 December 2022. Karomo was found guilty of setting fire to Leonard Kadubuli's shack while he was asleep with Anastasia Matende at Okahandja Park, an informal settlement in Windhoek. She also faced a charge of arson.According to Namibia Press Agency, Karomo had demanded entry to Kadubuli's shack on the night of the incident, threatening to burn it down and kill the occupants if her demands were not met. In the early hours of the next day, Karomo returned and set the shack ablaze, resulting in the deaths of Kadubuli and Matende.During the court proceedings, Judge Claudia Claasen noted that Karomo had compensated the families of the deceased with N.dollars 77,000, as ordered by a community court in Mbunza. Her lawyer, Mbanga Siyomunji, suggested a 16-year sentence, emphasizing Karomo's status as a first-time offender.Matende's mother testified during the sentencing submissions, highlighting the impact of her daughter's death on the family. Matende, who was employed at the time, left behind four children whom her mother, a pensioner, now struggles to support.Judge Claasen highlighted Karomo's actions, noting that after setting the shack on fire, Karomo returned home and listened to music, showing a lack of remorse. The judge also pointed out that Karomo's failure to testify in mitigation or apologize for her actions weighed against her in determining the sentence.
