Accra: Mubiza Combined School near Katima Mulilo: Mubiza Combined School, located near Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region, participated in the global observance of the 50th commemoration of the International Day of the African Child. This day is held in remembrance of the Soweto student uprising in 1976, where South African students protested the apartheid-era education policies, leading to the deaths of hundreds of students.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the principal of Mubiza Combined School, Humphrey Sikwanga, shared that a regional event was initially planned to occur at Mubiza. However, it has been rescheduled to 30 June 2026. Despite the postponement, the school decided to honor the significance of the day on its actual date. The celebration at the school was divided into two parts: the first part included remarks on the history of the day and a screening of the film 'Sarafina' for learners. The second part was dedicated to cultural activities, including poetry, drama, and speeches.

Sikwanga emphasized that the screening of 'Sarafina' was an educational opportunity for learners who had not seen the film before. He explained that the film would help them understand the events of 1976 in South Africa and the importance of rights and freedoms. Grade 9 learner, David Katombela, expressed that although he had watched the movie before, he supported its rescreening to provide other learners with the opportunity to learn from it.

Grade 7 learner, Manga Kulimbulula, pointed out that the annual event focuses on a new theme each year, which is reflected in the poems, songs, speeches, and dramas performed by the students. This year's theme, 'Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa,' was highlighted in the school's activities.

In addition, Katima Mulilo Combined School organized a session for deaf learners and a tree-planting activity as part of their commemorations, during which 11 fruit trees were planted by students on the school grounds.
