Cleric tasks Tinubu on security, education, others

Rt. Rev’d Godwin Robinson,Bishop Lafia Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has advocated President Bola Tinubu’s urgent intervene in critical sectors including education and security, to ensure his administration’s maximum impact on Nigerians.

Godwin made the call on Saturday, while delivering the Bishop’s Charge of the 3rd Session of the 8th Synod of the Diocese held at Mt. Zion Anglican Church Mararaba in Nasarawa State.

He urged Tinubu to use his experience to address issues which had threatened the wellbeing of Nigerians.

“The current estimate of Nigeria’s population stands at about 200 millions 69 per cent of this population is between the ages of 15 to 45 years.

“People in this age bracket are actively pursuing the acquisition of knowledge and skills for better productivity or better returns, but Nigeria education sector has failed to live up to its expectations.

“There are more than 10 million out of school children roaming the streets instead of receiving instructions”, he said.

According to him, infrastructure in many schools are in a bad shape while tertiary education is constantly disrupted by disputes between governments and workers.

“Now that lecturers are back in the classes, we pray and hope that there will be no need to go back to their trenches,” said.

Robinson partly blamed the security challenge in the country on the high rate of youth unemployment.

“It must be underscored that unemployment constitutes a security threat as an ‘idle mind is the devil’s workshop’.

“The government must priorise creating employment opportunities for its citizens. It is time to advance industrial revolution to move the economy from consumption to production.

“The teaming unemployed youths must be engaged in production activities,” he said.

The cleric called on both the public and private sectors to play their parts to develop the country industrially in order to tackle the unemployment challenges faced it faced with.

With the theme: `Arise and Shine’, taken from the book of Prophet Isaiah Chapter 60 verse 1, Godwin said the Church was optimistic that Nigeria will arise from its present challenges and shine.

Group urges enhanced budgetary allocation to laboratories

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has called for enhanced investment and budgetary allocation to the subsector to have quality and reliable medical diagnoses in the country,

The former National President of AMLSN, Dr Bassey Eya Bassey, made the call on Thursday in Enugu at the Maiden Annual Conference and Workshop 2023 organised by AMLSN, Enugu Chapter.

The Theme for the conference was the “Quality and Prospects of Medical Laboratory Services in Nigeria in the Face of Emerging Technologies”.

Bassey, who was the keynote speaker, was represented by a member, Musa Waziri.

He noted that adequate medical laboratory financing and provision of modern equipment would enable AMLSN members to compete globally and reduce medical tourism being experienced in the country.

The former AMLSN president said members could compete with their peers in other countries, stressing that their only predicament was dearth of resources, including equipment.

Bassey, who is also the National Coordinator for Extended Programme on Immunisation, said that 70 per cent hospitals diagnoses were made in the laboratories, adding that if positioned well, the country’s health sector would be among the best.

He called on governments and investors to invest in medical laboratories as there were lots of benefits to be derived.

“We cannot compete favourable globally because of poor funding and there are many analytical processes that cannot be done here because of the dearth of equipment.

“Our expectation is that government should look at its policy document that says that laboratory should have a budget and also a global policy that stated that laboratory should pursue accreditation and have a budget,” Bassey said.

Earlier in a welcome address, Dr Ejiofor Mamah, Chairman AMLSN, Enugu Chapter, said the conference was aimed at creating a forum where scholars, researchers and practitioners could come together to share scientific knowledge and experiences.

According to him, they expected to share knowledge on the areas of applied sciences, infectious diseases, epidemiology, public health pharmacology and other related field.

He decried that 20 years after the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) granted AMLSN autonomy to be professional body, Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) has remained a department in Nigerian universities instead of becoming a faculty.

Mamah, therefore, called on MLSCN, AMLSN, Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), National Universities Commission (NUC), Federal Ministry of Health and other the relevant authorities to ensure that MLS is transformed into a faculty in Nigerian universities.

“What binds us together supersedes whatever divides us. But most importantly, we should make deliberate efforts to take inclusivity in governance.

He added: “So far, the decisions that are coming out are those that will strengthen Nigeria.

“We’ll see Nigeria change before our very eyes and we’re committed to being a part of that change. We assure you not just of our loyalty but the stability of the parliament.”

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Freedom Court Parish, Idi-Araba, on Saturday took its medical outreach to Surulere area of Lagos with various health experts attending to different ailments.

The programme, organised by RCCG in partnership with Medplus Pharmacy, was tagged “Deliberate Acts of Kindness in Nations (DAKIN) Medical Outreach”, and held at Oretedo community, off Banire, Surulere.

Dentists, physiotherapists, general practitioners and other medical experts treated members of the community who trooped out for the programme.

Pastor Abiodun Famojuro, in charge of RCCG Freedom Court Parish, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the outreach was part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme of the church.

Famojuro said it was also a form of evangelism to demonstrate the love and light of Jesus Christ to residents.

“What we have here is what we call deliberate acts of kindness in nations. This is our CSR project. We brought medical expression to all our people here in this Banire/Oretedo community.

“We have dentists, physiotherapists, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians and others.

“It is our way of giving back to our community, we are just at Idi Araba and we know that affordable medical care is one of the greatest challenges that Nigerians are confronted with.

“We have brought it to be a blessing to them, to help them, support them and also to share the light of Jesus with them, but first and foremost to be a blessing to them directly,” he said.

Dr Durojaye Oluwafemi, one of the outreach doctors, said preventive medicine was important, hence the blood pressure, sugar and other checks of vitals, to ensure silent killer diseases were detected early and nipped in the bud.

“We are happy for the high turnout of the community,” he said.

Mr Kayode Shangodipe, a resident who benefited from the health screening, joined several others who spoke with NAN to commend the kindness of the church.

Supreme Court dismisses Menzies court appeal against NAC

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal made by Menzies Aviation against the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) last year, over the termination of a written agreement to provide ground services.

The appeal comes after Menzies disputed the lawfulness of the notice and in a letter dated 22 April 2022, which the NAC later withdrew and informed Menzies that they stood by the termination date of 30 June 2022 as provided for in the extension of the original agreement.

In a statement issued by NAC Chief Executive Officer Bisey Uirab on Friday, the agreement to provide ground services at the Hosea Kutako International Airport was for an initial five-year period that commenced on 01 January 2014, lapsed on 31 December 2021 and was subject to the right of renewal for three years.

According to NAC, new bids were then invited prior to the termination date of the said agreement and a six months extension was agreed to between the NAC and Menzies from January 2022 to 30 June 2022, subject to a month’s written notice of termination, should the procurement process that was pending at the time be finalised prior to the termination date.

“The NAC then asked for an undertaking by Menzies that it would vacate the NAC premises when the agreement between NAC and Menzies expires on the said date, however that was not the case. On 27 May 2022, NAC launched an urgent application seeking a declaratory order that the agreement would terminate on 30 June 2022 and that Menzies would be obliged to, on that day, cease to provide services and give vacant occupation of the premises to the successful bidder, which was Paragon,” Uirab noted.

Menzies then launched another appeal against this, which was however dismissed, with costs, during a hearing which took place in the Supreme Court on 19 April 2023, where the court demanded that Menzies’ unlawful hold over the premises and forcing NAC to make use of its services should be put to an end.

The judgment also emphasised that as Paragon was awarded the bid and that award had not been set aside, Paragon should be allowed to act in accordance with the bid as it is willing to do.

High suicide rate among men alarming: Shapumba

Police in the Erongo Region have expressed concern over the increasing number of suicides committed in the region particularly by men, saying it has become worrisome.

According to Erongo Community Policing Commander Inspector Ileni Shapumba in a statement on a police-media platform, the numbers of mostly male victims taking their own lives in reported incidents, call for concerted action from everyone within the community.

“While we are responsible for crime prevention and maintenance of law and order, as officers responding first and investigating these incidents of suicides, it has really become alarming. As we call upon people to seek alternative solutions to problems that are affecting them, it’s probably also worth mentioning that, we that are surrounding victims look into our actions and give support to help others giving up in life,” Shapumba noted.

He added that suicide is a social issue and in most cases investigations reveal social circumstances could be among the driving factors.

The inspector made this statement after another case of suicide was reported in Walvis Bay on Friday.

According to Shapumba, the 26-year-old Lukas Nghediimwe who was employed by the National Youth Service, reportedly hung himself in an empty house where he was posted as a guard from 15h00 that day.

It is alleged that around 23h00 when two colleagues came to relieve him at the end of his shift, his body was discovered hanging from the ceiling.

The colleagues reported the incident to their supervisor who then notified the Namibian Police.

No suicide note was left and no foul play is suspected.

Kudus run havoc on UNAM in Premier League clash

Walvis Bay-based Namibia Rugby Premier League outfit Kudus maintained their position at the top of the log after collecting maximum points away from home with a 24-08 win against UNAM on Saturday.

The coastal-based outfit travelled to Windhoek as log leaders and maintained their status at the UNAM Stadium which has been known as the slaughterhouse in previous seasons.

Mbumba disheartened by unmarked graves of heroes

Vice President Nangolo Mbumba on Sunday said he was disturbed by the many graves of Namibian heroes that remain unmarked to this day.

Speaking at Okahandja during the commemoration of the 127th anniversary of the battle of Otjunda and the subsequent execution of Chief Kahimemua Nguvauva, Mbumba said he is disheartened that their graves remained unmarked.

During the battle of Otjunda, many of Kahimemua’s soldiers also died. However, their graves are not marked.

Mbumba called on the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to ensure that a befitting shrine is laid at Otjunda and other historical places such as Okatumba, Vaalgras and Ozombuzovindimba, among others, where communities fought forces of occupation and apartheid colonial forces.

“It is only in this manner that we will truly honour the sacrifices of our forefathers who stood firm against colonial occupation,” Mbumba said.

As Namibians commemorate the history of Chief Kahimemua, Mbumba took time to call on current and future generations to remember that freedom and independence was not attained on a silver platter.

“It came because of the sacrifices of the heroes and heroines, whose blood waters our freedom,” he explained.

He urged the youth to be united under the banner of One Namibia, One Nation to defend the freedom and independence.

“Chief Kahimemua on 06 May 1896 at Otjunda in the Omaheke Region, declared ‘enough was enough’ to the aggressive and expansionist policy of land robbery by the German colonial authorities. He therefore became the first Namibian chief to pay the highest sacrifice by the German colonial forces,” Mbumba said.

Cabinet ministers, traditional leaders, members of the diplomatic corps and members of the public attended the event at Commando in Okahandja.

Cabinet approves prohibition of exporting raw materials

Cabinet has approved the prohibition of exporting certain critical minerals unprocessed.

The decision was taken during the 8th Cabinet meeting held on 06 June 2023, stating that raw materials such as lithium, graphite, manganese and rare earth elements are not to be exported.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has been receiving public criticism about the lack of value addition locally on the vast amounts of minerals leaving the country, which has the potential to spur Namibia’s economic growth and development.

Cabinet has, however, approved that only smaller quantities of such raw materials may be allowed for export at the direction of the ministry.

The mining industry accounts for approximately 11 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) providing more than 50 per cent of foreign earnings.

Namibia is a world-class producer of rough diamonds, uranium, gold, zinc, acid-grade fluorspar, copper, lead, limestone, cement, salt, and dimension stone and is prospective of lithium, graphite, cobalt and rare earths and other minerals that are now declared critical by many countries globally.
