President predicts better response to burn cases

Angolan Head of State João Lourenço announced Saturday that the Hospital dealing with burn injuries, under construction in the Urban District of Kilamba in municipality of Belas, Luanda, will meet the need for patient care in the country, particularly in the capital.

João Lourenço referred to the fact that Luanda will be able to count, within two years, on two health units with this specialty, which, in his view, working simultaneously will certainly respond to the situation.

He recalled that the other unit, which has existed for a long time, is currently undergoing rehabilitation and expansion works, already in the final phase, as it had limited space and poor conditions.

According to the President, the infrastructure should be delivered in the next few days.

“Unfortunately, there have been many victims of house fires and beyond, which affect people of all ages, even children, and this has worried us”, he said, highlighting that the country does not yet have the capacity to match the number of cases that have arisen, especially in Luanda, which has more than ten million inhabitants.

As for the other provinces, João Lourenço explained that they will create areas, within general hospitals, to treat burn cases.

On Saturday, the head of State assessed the construction works of the Hospital specialized in burn cases of Kilamba, with a capacity for 248 beds, and expressed his belief that the contractor will respect the commitment to deliver it in March 2025, the agreed period in the contract.

Once completed, it will provide better healthcare to the population.

The works are secured by 270 workers, including nationals and foreigners and started in March 2022.

The infrastructure occupies an area of 48,000 square meters, with physical execution at 12.5 percent.

The project is estimated at 149 million Euros and includes four buildings

Matias and Shivolo win the Nedbank CitiDash Run

Long-distance runners Simon Matias and Martha Shivolo were on Sunday crowned winners of the 2023 Nedbank CitiDash Run after successfully outclassing their opponents in the 10 kilometres (km) elite run.

The third edition of the Nedbank CitiDash Run, a sporting event that sees elite long-distance runners as well as friends and families competing in the five and 10-kilometre runs attracted over 2 000 runners.

The race started and finished at Zoo Park on Independence Avenue, opposite the new Nedbank Campus.

The elite race saw Namibia Correctional Service runner Shivolo dominating her field with a personal time of 35 minutes and 02 seconds (35:02). Namibia’s representative in marathon running at the recently ended World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Alina Armas, came second while junior runner Monica Kandjebo who represented Ohangwena Athletics Club was third.

Shivolo’s previous record was 36:00.

Meanwhile, in the male category, the new kid on the track Matias, outclassed veteran runners Jeremia Shaliaxwe and Rainhold Tomas who finished second and third respectively.

Matias completed the 10km run with a time of 32:00 minutes.

In an interview with Nampa after the race, Matias said: “I am happy to have won this race. It was hilly when we were coming back but I saw Shaliaxwe did not have the same energy as when we were going down to the turning point, so I kept pushing and came first,” he said, adding that winning this race is a bonus and motivation for him to keep working hard.

Namibia’s representative in the male category at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in marathon running Tomas, said he found the going tough as his body struggled to respond.

“I only had one week rest after the world champs and then started training again, and I found the going tough, but I hope I will be ready come the Navachab half marathon,” Tomas said.

The winner of the women’s category, Shivolo said completing the race in first position surprised her, but she is happy with her achievement.

“The race was tough due to the hills coming back but I should thank my coach (Robert Kaxuxwena) for the encouragement at training and I ran my personal best today. I am looking forward to future competitions,” said Shivolo.

This year’s Nedbank CitiDash Run also saw wheelchair racers and visually impaired athletes competing, with Roodley Gowaseb and Nico Kharuxab in first and second in that race.

Kogi as a shining example in educational growth

Kogi governor Yahaya Bello has recorded giant strides across all sectors since he took charge on 27 Jan. 2016, but many analysts believe that his accomplishments in the educational sector remain outstanding.

The analysts, however, say that the feat is not surprising as he had declared, from the onset, that he would pay special attention to that sector ostensibly because the success of other sectors would depend on quality personnel that are products of a sound education.

It is a testimony to such commitment to the sector that Kogi has three state universities – the only state with that feat in the country.

The institutions include Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Ayingba, Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara and the newly established Kogi State University (KSU), Kabba.

The institutions, one in each senatorial district, are expected to provide opportunities for every Kogi child seeking university education.

Aside the universities, there is the Kogi State Polytechnic and Kogi College of Education both of which are equipped with human and material resources to produce quality graduates.

The state has also established three Model Science Secondary Schools to enhance the teaching of science and technology subjects at an early age.

Of great importance to observers is the quality of structures in the schools with modern teaching and learning aids to ensure that quality is not compromised.

Mr Wemi Jones, education commissioner, recently spoke on government’s special attention to the sector.

“We are working to make Kogi a model in educational growth.

“The governor has made education his number one focus. To demonstrate this, he has increased its annual budgetary allocation from 26 percent to 30 percent which is even beyond UNESCO’s 26 per cent mark.”

He said that a national rating carried out two years ago showed that the commitment of the Bello-led administration in Kogi had shored up the state’s educational rating from an abysmal 33.5 per cent that placed it on the 23rd position in 2012.

“Currently, Kogi is rated as the most educationally advanced state in the North-Central and one of the topmost in the North,” he said.

Indeed, it is to Bello’s credit that all tertiary institutions in Kogi have all their programmes accredited by the various regulatory bodies.

But, perhaps, nothing demonstrates Bello’s commitment to educational growth than the speed with which the third state university came on board.

Many people in Kogi have described it as the Bello magic!

The process began on June 20, when the Kogi State Executive Council approved a memo containing the Bill for the establishment of the institution.

The governor signed the Bill into law on June 23, barely 24 hours after it was passed by the House of Assembly.

Bello had earlier inaugurated the Implementation Committee for the university with Olu Obafemi, a Professor of English Language, as its chairman.

At the inauguration, Bello urged the committee to speed up action toward the immediate commencement of academic activities

The governor said that for fairness, Okun land deserved a university like other senatorial districts who already had one each.

“You are all aware that since the inception of Kabba Province, this has been the dream of our founding fathers,” he said.

To the surprise of everyone, the Kabba varsity got the nod of the National University Commission (NUC) on June 26 as the 62nd state university and the 265th in the country.

NUC boss Abubakar Rasheed, while endorsing the school, pledged full support to its growth

while urging the youths to take full advantage of the institution.

Expectedly, the support for the new university is already coming in torrents with former acting Kogi governor Clarance Olafemi, and Sen Smart Adeyemi commending the governor for the feat they felt was a demonstration of his respect for equity and fairness.

Olafemi described Bello “as a God-sent governor and a fair-minded person”.

Adeyemi stressed that education remained a catalyst for economic development.

“As at the last count, we recorded about 286 professors and about 25 associate professors in Okun, some of whom will be glad to contribute their quota towards the growth of the university.

“It is, therefore, heartwarming that the university is sited in Kabba, the headquarters of Kogi West senatorial district,” Adeyemi said.

Already, the process of recruiting both academic and non-academic staff of the school is ongoing with academic activities scheduled to commence this session, according to Jones.

Gov. Bello has also declared free education in public schools from Primary to the Secondary level beginning from the 2023/2024 academic session. Also free is the registration for all external examinations from primary to secondary schools.

The wonderful offer was announced by the education commissioner on behalf of the governor during the official handing over of computers donated by NNPC and Chevron to some selected schools.

According to Jones, the free education policy of the Kogi government also includes payment of examination fees for students writing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

An excited Jones commended the governor for positioning public schools to compete favourably with their private counterparts.

Another enviable feat is the enactment of Kogi State Education Law 2020 to ease access to education and upscale quality service delivery in both public and private schools.

But, particularly exciting to Kogi residents is the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara that targets massive growth in the number of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) graduates to meet the technological needs of Kogi that has huge deposits of minerals.

Government has also approved the recruitment of 3,979 secondary school teachers with 1,100 already engaged.

According to Bello, the move will solve the problem of manpower gaps in secondary schools.

With these efforts, it is little wonder that Kogi has been rated one of the best in terms of SUBEB projects and programme execution, by various visiting agencies.

It is also to Bello’s credit that State-owned tertiary educational institutions now operate like private institutions as students graduate as and when due without any obstruction by ASUU strikes.

This has been the case since 2016!

To further smoothen academic sessions, Bello took steps to curb cultism in all schools. Drug abuse, hooliganism and other vices that usual slow down academic activities have also been tackled. In many schools now, the vices have either been exterminated or reduced to the barest minimum.

A recent visit to most schools also showed a massive improvement in the quality of hostels with students commending government’s efforts.

The government has also introduced School Adoption and Mentorship Programme (SAMP), an initiative of the education ministry, to encourage mentorship for learners and the restoration of the lost glory of education via the support and contributions of stakeholders.

To support SAMP, the governor, on Nov. 12, 2022, inaugurated the distribution of 11,000 free textbooks to all second year Senior Secondary School students in public schools across the three senatorial districts.

The Chemistry and Physics textbooks were purchased by Alhaji Ahmed Ododo, the former Auditor General of the Local Government Service Commission, who is the flag bearer of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the November 11, Kogi governorship election.

But, as the Bello administration gradually winds up, analysts have continued to wonder if the giant strides in the educational sector shall be sustained.

They equally wonder if successive administrations will build upon the achievements.

Many have said that the only way to sustain the achievements is to vote in Ododo, the APC governorship candidate, who undoubtedly shares Bello’s dream for the state.

Many others also believe that Bello’s wonders in Kogi represent a huge advantage for Ododo as he has been in the thick of all the efforts.

With Bello’s performance attracting many defectors into the APC, it is expected that the new wave will push up Ododo to replace his boss.

Many believe that such is the only way to sustain Bello’s achievements for the ultimate benefit of Kogi State. (NANFeatures)

Review Nigeria’s education policy now, British charity advises FG

The British charity, IA-Foundation has advised the Nigerian government to review its education policy to embrace soft skills, to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

The founder and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Mrs Ibironke Adeagbo, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

She said that embracing soft skills was necessary in the education policy of the country for the masses to depend less on white-collar jobs and acquire skills that would make them to overcome the challenges of the current century.

According to her, Nigeria should revamp its education curricula to reflect present day realities and embrace soft skills, entrepreneurial skills and digital know-hows to make youths to survive present day challenges.

Adeagbo noted that colonial legacies in the education sector had left Nigeria rudderless in its education and other developmental aspirations, saying the way forward was for the West African country to overhaul its education policy completely.

She condemned a call attributed to the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye that Nigerian children should be made to get involved in industrial production and urban development of Nigeria.

Kennedy-Ohanenye reportedly made the call on Sept. 8 in Awka, Anambra, while speaking at the Anambra State Summit, staged by the state government to foster development in the state.

Adeagbo, who has been campaigning to have every Nigerian child in school, argued that involving children in industrial production was a clear violation of Nigeria’s Child Rights Act 2003.

She re-stated that Nigeria should put measures in place to take back its 20.2 million children currently out of school back to classrooms, to secure the future of the country.

“I am shocked to hear the suggestion by the minister, calling for children to be involved in production of toothpicks. This is unacceptable.

“We are supposed to be protecting the rights of children in Nigeria in line with the Child Rights Acts 2003 and not propagating suggestions that will subject children to child labour and other forms of activities that will keep them out of classrooms,” Adeagbo said.

She, however, lauded the Federal Government for expressing its commitment to tackle the out-of-school crisis, saying that no Nigerian child deserved to be left uneducated in the 21st century.

“With over 100 children already in school as a result of our work, we will not relent until the last child gets into school,’’ Adeagbo added.

IA-Foundation which was established in 2019 has been active in Nigeria, where it has been campaigning vigorously to ensure that every child, especially the girl-child had access to education.

Nigeria, envy of international community in spite of challenges – Group

The Progressive Nigerians for Sustainable Future (PNSF) has said that in spite of Nigeria’s challenges at both national and state levels, it remains the envy of the international community.

Mr Ade Omole, Co-convener of the group, said this at a dinner on Saturday in Abuja, organised to celebrate President Bola Tinubu’s first 100 days in office.

Omole, who was the Director of Diaspora for the defunct All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), congratulated Nigerains on the peaceful transition, inauguration, and successful 100 days of Tinubu in office.

He said it was an indication of the growing commitment of Nigeria’s leadership and its citizens to the principle of democracy and good governance.

He added that it was however, imperative that we build on our achievements as elder statespersons, leaders and captains of industries.

“Our followers look up to us to provide direction, guidance and a solid foundation for Nigeria’s political and economic development,” Omole said.

He further added that the continued support and prayers of Nigerains were still needed in the challenging, but not impossible task of nation building.

He congratulated Tinubu, and Vice-President Kashim Shettima for steering the ship of state in the right direction since May 29.

He also congratulated them on their victory at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and commended their maturity and statesmanship.

Omole said Tinubu’s unprecedented accomplishments in just 100 days in office, was a pointer to a just, prosperous, and sustainable Nigeria that all would be proud of.

He noted that policy decisions so far taken by the Tinubu presidency had pulled the country from the brink of socio-economic catastrophe.

He described some of the policies as the first line charge that had rekindled the hopes of the Nigerian public in their beliefs that better days were still possible in the polity.

Omole said much of the party’s manifesto was built on Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“On President Tinubu’s inauguration day on Monday, May 29, 2023, he announced that the fuel subsidy had ended, reiterating that it was dead and buried.

“Yes, the removal of fuel subsidy has caused and continues to cause socio-economic dislocation in the polity, but measures have also been taken to cushion the economic effect.

“We cannot be oblivious to this hardship, because the removal must have its short-run pain if we must have a long-run gain as a country.

“However, the other side of this fuel subsidy removal coin is the amount at least N1 trillion of savings accrued to the national coffers,” he said.

He stressed that this substantial financial windfall had increased the federal allocations of our subnational governments since July 2023.

He added that it had also made state governments to have a new lease on their financial purse strings as more funds were made available for capital projects.

He noted that harmonising the country’s fuzzy forex regime which had been reprehensible, if not detrimental to national earnings, was another bold step worth mentioning taken by Tinubu’s presidency.

“A few days after assuming office, Tinubu gave the directive to harmonise the conflicting forex regime. Another hope was rekindled for the Nigerian people by this singular act.

“These bold steps taken by a bold president amongst others, clearly show that Tinubu’s presidency would be different from usual.

“One of the most accurate measures of a good and exceptional leader is how he responds to situations.

“That not only rears their heads on the spur of the moment, but also situations that are not his own making,” Omole said.

He noted that Tinubu was currently in India and would soon be coming home with investment goodies in the interest of Nigerians.

According to Omole, the president has attracted $14 billion in investment pledges from investors of the subcontinent at the Nigeria-India economic roundtable.

During the event, Gen. Abdulmalik Jubril, National Chairman, Nigeria Legion, stressed the need for a review of the country’s security architecture to ensure effective security of life and property.

He also called for training and retraining of security personnel as well as adequate funding for security agencies, adding that synergy among security agencies was very key to addressing issues of insecurity in the country.(NAN)

Catholic Bishops task governments on proliferation of arms

Governments at all levels must rise and checkmate the proliferation of small arms as insecurity rages unabated in the country, Catholic Bishops declared in Abuja on Sunday.

They decried the terror regularly unleashed on communities by bandits, religion extremists and other gunmen.

“Governments should urgently check the proliferation of small arms and light weapons facilitated by the booming business of gunrunning which fuels insecurity in our country.

“It does not make sense to disarm the populace while armed criminals terrorise unarmed citizens,’’ President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, said.

He was addressing the opening of the second plenary of a retreat of the CBCN.

“We appeal to kidnappers and their sponsors and to those who unleash violence in our communities to have a change of heart and shun all forms of criminality to avoid God’s wrath.

“We also strongly denounce the mindless and reckless spilling of blood and destruction of property in our communities by hardened criminals and some trigger-happy government security operatives.

“The shedding of innocent blood is an abomination. God hates hands that shed innocent blood,’’ he stressed.

Speaking on the state of the economy Ugorji noted that while the economy was declining, the masses continued to suffer just as crime rate increased.

“We cannot get tired of urging government to rise to its primary responsibility of securing the lives and property of its citizens,’’ he said.

The archbishop also expressed the hope that future elections in Nigeria would be decided at the polls and not at the courts.

He appealed to governments at all levels to cut the cost of governance and to address deepening poverty and growing youth unemployment.

Ugorji also had some advice for ECOWAS and for the AU.

“We appeal to the leadership of ECOWAS and the AU to resist the temptation of recognising military intervention as solution to leadership crisis in Africa.

“They should continue to explore the more peaceful option of diplomatic negotiations.

“Such dialogues may require due attention to the causes of rising military interventions in African countries.

“While we denounce coups, we must state loud and clear that political leadership exists to promote the common good.

“Consequently, political leaders incapable of furthering the welfare of their citizens or who work against their peoples’ interests and wellbeing have no moral justification to continue in power, whether elected or not,’’ he said.

Also addressing the retreat, General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Prof. Samson Fatokun, commended the Catholic bishops for their commitment to peace and unity in Nigeria.

Fatokun represented the CAN president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh at the retreat.

He commended the CBCN for constantly making interventions by raising prophetic voice on crucial national issues.

He noted that Nigeria was still buffeted on all sides by issues that threatened its collective existence.

He said it was incumbent on faith leaders to provide hope and guidance for the faithful and for the citizenry at large.

“This plenary session is coming at a time when Nigerians are still going through excruciating pains, harsh economic climate banditry and kidnapping.

“Prices of basic necessities have skyrocketed beyond the reach of ordinary people and there appears not to be any respite in sight.

“The living conditions of average Nigerian families today are better imagined than experienced.

“It is indeed a time to worry! In all these, I believe that God Almighty will use faith leaders to fix this country if we do not give up,’’ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

FCTA clarifies crushing of impounded commercial motorcycles

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), says the crushing of impounded commercial motorcycles popularly known as “Okada” was in line with the provisions of the law.

Mrs Deborah Osho, the Head of Operations, DRTS made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

NAN recalls that the Joint Task Force Team of the FCTA on Aug. 31 impounded and crushed 400 commercial motorcycles for operating illegally in Abuja capital city.

The crushing, according to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Garba Haruna, who led the exercise was in line with the law banning operations of commercial motorcycles in the city.

Similar exercises were carried out at different times in the past as part of enforcement of the ban of okada operations in the city centre.

NAN added that the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation, 2005, has specifically directed okada riders to operate only in designated areas.

The then Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Information and Strategy, Hajiya Amina Salihu had announced the ban of okada from plying the city centre from Oct. 1, 2006.

The city centre in the context of the FCT refers to the districts covered by the Phase 1 of the master plan.

These are Wuse, Central Business District, Three Arms Zone, Maitama, Asokoro, Utako, Wuye, Garki, Diplomatic Zone, Mabushi, Katampe, Gwarinpa and Gudu.

Salihu had explained that they were, however, allowed to operate in other areas of the FCT.

Osho told NAN that the ban was still in force, adding that part of the enforcement was to crush impounded okada within the confines of the law.

She said that the operators were allowed to operate freely in areas like Gwagwalada, Bwari, and Nyanya among other suburbs of the FCT, stressing that any okada impounded within the city would be crushed.

She added that the law provided two grounds for crushing impounded motorcycles – those impounded for constituting security threats, and those impounded with a Court forfeiture Order.

The official explained that the ban became necessary following a public outcry that the Okada operators were constituting a menace in the city.

She said that motorcycles were used by criminals as means of quick getaway from crime scenes, and kidnappings in residential areas of the city.

“They were also used for many criminal activities including snatching valuables and mobile handset from unsuspecting passersby.

“This is in addition to the rising numbers of casualties from accidents involving Okada riders,” she said.

The head of operations said that security agencies had tagged the commercial motorcycles as constituting a security threat within the city and wanted them off the city routes.

On whether the operators were aware of the ban and the consequences when caught, Oshio said that riders were well sensitised even before the enforcement of the ban in 2006.

She added that security and government agencies equally held series of meetings with their leadership, reminding them of the ban and what could happen once an okada was impounded.

She advised residents against patronising Okada for their safety and those buying motorcycles for the riders to stop, saying “we will continue to crush them whenever we impound them.

On his part, the Secretary, Command and Control of the FCTA Enforcement Task Force, Mr Peter Olumuji, also said that crushing the impounded motorcycles was to strengthen enforcement of the ban.

Olumuji explained that earlier, when a motorcycle was impounded, the owner would face a mobile court where he or she would be fined N2000 or N3000.

He added that after paying the fine, the okada would be released to the owners and they would be back on the streets.

He said to address the challenge, the ban was amended to include forfeiture of impounded commercial motorcycles to the FCTA.

“This means that once an okada is impounded, it becomes the property of the FCTA.

“While this appeared to solve the problem, it also came with a challenge, following allegations that officials of DRTS collect bribes and release the motorcycles to the owners.

“It was to address this problem that security agencies and the enforcement taskforce opted for crushing of impounded okada.

“This did not only solve the problem of alleged corruption in the seizures, but also the question of economic losses,” he said.

The secretary explained that after the motorcycles were crushed, they would be sold to recycling companies and the money deposited in a government account. (NAN)

While urging the Federal Government to fund and encourage such projects in schools, Nwadishi said the Abuja Carnival should be revived to reawaken the cultural creativity of states.

“I pray the new administration, that they should revive the carnival. They should inculcate, as a matter of right and privileges, in the young persons of the original inhabitants and other ethnic groups to showcase their culture.”

She further said that the objective of the school competition was to recognise and preserve the cultural heritage of the indigenes of the FCT.

“In the process of urbanisation and development, historical, cultural, and artistic treasures were lost. But CTA through this project, has continued to amplify the voices of the original inhabitants and their culture.

“This may have been tagged a competition, but truly, it is just a discussion and conversation conveyed through the beautiful lenses of young people – talents and spoken words on canvas.

“These brave young ones are the tomorrow we see today.”
