Pinnick says secondary school football crucial to discovering budding talents

Mr Amaju Pinnick, FIFA Executive Council Member and former Chairman, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), has emphasised the need to strengthen football in secondary schools to give more opportunities to budding talents.

According to him, more attention to secondary school football will boost the sports in rural areas and shore up infrastructural growth that will, in turn, enhance the quality of education nationwide.

Pinnick spoke in Lagos on Monday when he received the Technical Board of Kalidon Ventures Limited.

Kalidon Ventures has just signed a 10 years lease agreement with the University of Lagos to build a modern Astro turf facility.

Astro turf is a type of artificial fiber that is used instead of grass on some sports fields.

The Lagos University facility is expected to come with a state-of-the-art Lounge, Game Arcades and a multi dimensional viewing system.

Pinnick said that the ongoing football construction works at Hussey College in Warri would serve as a model on how developed football programmes in secondary schools could produce soccer stars for local and international leagues.

The Warri project is being undertaken by the former NFF boss.

“When football facilities are developed, they could bring the much-needed extra revenue to fund the schools.

“They could also impact infrastructure and engender very credible technical partnerships between the schools and well regarded international stakeholders,” he added.

Pinnick, generally regarded as an influential international football administrator, commended the Kalidon Venture Technical Team’s decision to build world class Astro turfs that would serve the football community.

The football administrator accepted to work for the firm in an advisory capacity.

Earlier, Mr Omotayo Oyewome, Managing Director, Kalidon Ventures, had told Pinnick that the Lagos facility would be the pilot one as plans had already reached advanced stages to expand very rapidly into the six geographical centres of the country.

He listed the benefiting states to include Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Abuja and Kaduna.

Already, front line investment banking franchise – Hamilton and George – have been appointed as Financial Advisers of the project, he stated.

Other Kalidon Ventures directors on the visit were Oyewole Olaoluwa Ajayi, Oluwaseyi Atinaro and Joseph Edgar.

Election petition tribunal sacks Nasarawa Governor

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lafia on Monday nullified the election of Gov. Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a split decision.

It instead declared Mr David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

Delivering the judgment lasting more than four hours virtually, chairman of the three-member tribunal, Justice Ezekiel Ajayi, declared Ombugadu the rightful winner of the election.

Justice Chiemelie Onaga, member one of the panel agreed with the judgement read by the panel chairman.

The chairman declared that Ombugadu provided the results of the various polling units and forms EC 8A and proved to the tribunal that the results were manipulated in favour of the APC.

He said that based on the proof from the various polling units before the tribunal, Ombugadu had the majority of valid votes at the election.

He ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Sule and issue a new one to Ombugadu.

The only dissenting judgment was delivered by Justice Ibrahim Mashi, who dismissed the petition filed by the PDP candidate for lacking in merit.

He said the petitioner failed to prove his case and upheld INEC’s declaration of Sule as winner.

Reacting to the tribunal’s decision, Ombugadu’s counsel, Mr Johnson Usman (SAN), lauded it for a detailed judgment.

The counsel said the tribunal had proved that the court is the last hope of the common man by affirming the decision of the majority of the people of the state at the poll.

Family of 4 electrocuted in Taraba

The Police Command in Taraba on Monday confirmed the electrocution of a family of four around Dinyavo area of Jalingo, the state capital.

Mr Abdullahi Usman, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident in a statement in Jalingo.

According to him, the incident happened around 11:00 a.m. on Monday.

“We suspect it resulted from a power surge.

“At about 11:00 a.m. on Monday, we were reliably informed that a house located at Dinyavoh area of Jalingo was on fire.

“Detectives from GRA Police Division were quickly deployed to the scene and, on arrival, found the four victims with burns suspected to be from electrocution.

“The victims are Remond Ofonbuk, 44, his wife, Mfonbong Remond, Hevean Remond, 15, and First Remond, 13 years old.

“We have received information indicating that immediately power was restored, the transformer serving the area blew up.

“We learnt that many houses within the neighbourhood experienced high electric voltage which might have led to the fire outbreak that inflicted burns on the victims.

“Our detectives quickly evacuated the victims to Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo for treatment but they were confirmed dead on arrival,” he said.

Usman said that the corpses had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy while investigation had commenced to ascertain the real cause of the incident.

We can defy the odds and get Nigeria working – Muftwang

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has said that Nigeria can defy its current difficulties and strive to become a great nation.

Mutfwang said this at the Independence Day parade, organised by the State Government to mark Nigeria’s 63rd anniversary on Monday at Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos.

“Despite the odds we face in the nation, we can surmount all of them and make Nigeria rise to glory again.

“I continue to urge us to have faith in our country because we have no other country to call our own except Nigeria,” he said.

The governor thanked security agencies for their contributions on peace building in the state and assured them that their efforts would not be in vain.

According to him, defying the weather by the participating school children in the march parade is a demonstration of the true Nigerian spirit of resilience to overcome difficult situations.

He urged Nigerians to continue to support their leaders in the discharge of their duties and pray to God to guide them.

Speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Musa Ashoms, thanked Mutfwang for his people-oriented policies, expressing the confidence that it would reposition Plateau to be a virile state.

He thanked all the participating schools, security and paramilitary agencies for their patriotism exhibited through the march past.

Gov. Oyebanji counts blessings of Ekiti creation 27 years after

Ekiti Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, on Saturday counted many blessings from the creation of the state 27 years.

The governor, in a broadcast to the people of the state marking the creation on Oct. 1, 1996 and the 63rd Independence Anniversary of Nigeria, noted that there are abundant reasons to justify the celebration.

Oyebanji recalled that as a young university lecturer, he served as the Secretary of the Committee for the creation of the state, a body which included prominent traditional rulers, statesmen, captains of industry, top bureaucrats, among others

The governor congratulated all Ekiti people on the 27th anniversary and also thanked those whose toiled and sweated to bring about its realisation.

“As we are thankful to God for how long we have gone as a people, we also need to reflect on the unity of the past that gave us the State and the need to do even far more to achieve more,” he said.

He expressed satisfaction that the state had excelled in many aspects of Human Development Indices and became a front-liner in education, life expectancy, access to quality healthcare services, physical infrastructure development, access to water, peace, ease of doing business, gender equality, social inclusion, among others.

While noting that Ekiti is building a formidable profile of a progressive and development-oriented state that is poised for inclusive prosperity for all, Oyebanji expressed his commitment to the dreams of the founding fathers to utilise its abundant mineral resources.

He disclosed that his administration is already collaborating with appropriate Federal Government’s agencies that will invest in the exploration of the state’s God-given mineral resources to create wealth and increase its internally generated revenue.

The governor used the occasion to appeal to the organised labour to sheathe its sword and exhaust the avenue of dialogue to resolve issues around the planned indefinite strike action slated to commence on Tuesday.

Oyebanji said that “on our part, we have undertaken some interventions to cushion the impact of the subsidy removal on our people.

“Apart from the direct food distribution and cash transfer to the most vulnerable, Government has also made buses available to staff and students, especially in the state capital, to ameliorate the cost of transportation.

“Beyond this however, is that, the Federal Government has promised that there will be a wage review across board soonest.

“The good news is that, even, for those not earning salaries directly from government, with more money available for workers as more disposable income and more money for government to undertake critical infrastructure development, more jobs will be available and the circular flow of money will ensure that the current monetary challenges will give way to the envisaged shared prosperity.

“I therefore want to appeal to the organised labour movement to exercise absolute patience and dialogue in resolving the current economic challenges. We cannot afford to compound the already tensed situation by shutting down this extremely fragile economy.

“It will be like cutting one’s nose to spite one’s own face. Whatever may be gained thereafter will be nothing but a temporary victory which would have done an incalculable damage to the economy and which may be difficult to reverse in the immediate.”

Oyebanji noted that his administration acknowledges that one of the dreams of the founders is that government is a continuum and that no administration is an island from those before it .

He said that the philosophy serves as the motivation for the continuation of ongoing and abandoned projects met on ground which are useful to the socioeconomic development of the state.

“For example, we have completed the Ado-Ekiti Central Bus Terminal, the Ekiti Council of Traditional Rulers’ Chamber, ten Secondary Health Facilities, major street lights, re-connection of Ekiti East, Aiyekire and some parts of Ekiti West and Ikole Local Government areas to the national grid after many years of darkness.

“We have also undertaken new projects such as rehabilitation of many roads in Ado-Ekiti. We are continuing with the Ikole township road, just as we are rehabilitating the Ilawe-Igede, Ado-Ilawe roads, Ikere-Ilawe, Erijiyan-Ilawe roads. We are also reconstructing the Igbara-Odo-Ikogosi road among others. More projects will be captured for execution in the ongoing budget preparation exercise,” he said.

He paid tributes to all former helmsmen of the state including the late Col. Inua Bawa, Navy Capt. Atanda Yusuff, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Chief Segun Oni, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Chief Ayodele Fayose, the late Brig.-Gen. Tunji Olurin, Rt. Hon. Tope Ademiluyi and Rt. Hon. Tunji Odeyemi for their various roles in the development of the state.

Postpartum hemorrhage: On a quest to save mothers, babies

Mrs Aisha Al-Hassan is a 33-year-old trader and mother of three children. Her life revolves around her family and business.

Unfortunately, she died from postpartum hemorrhage complications that arose after delivery of her fourth baby.

Sadly, Al-Hassan is among 14 per cent of Nigerian women who had died as a result of maternal death.

According to the World Health Organisation, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is losing more than half a litre of blood within 24 hours of childbirth.

PPH affects 14 million women every year—killing 70,000 of them, primarily in low-income countries; and those who survive often face long-term, disabling complications, such as heart or kidney failure.

A common cause of postpartum hemorrhage is anaemia, or severe iron deficiency. Anaemia affects as many as 37 per cent of pregnant women around the world.

Dr Hadiza Galadanci, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Health Sciences, Bayero University Kano, said Postpartum hemorrhage was the number one cause of maternal death, with data showing that Nigeria has the highest maternal deaths globally.

Galadanci explained that there was a critical flaw in the way PPH was diagnosed, noting that healthcare workers often have a hard time recognising how much blood loss was too much blood loss.

“The only tool they have is a rough visual estimate,” she said.

Galadanci and a team of researchers in four African countries with high maternal mortality in a study they called E-MOTIVE, discovered that about half of the women who experience PPH were never diagnosed at all.

“Therefore, they never got lifesaving treatment,” Galadanci said at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers Conference held on the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York.

The professor added that when PPH was identified, healthcare workers relied on a series of five treatments to stop the bleeding: uterine massage, oxytocic drugs, tranexamic acid, IV fluids, and genital-tract examination.

“But those interventions were being delivered sequentially—and far too slowly.

“We asked ourselves, why don’t we bundle the interventions together, administering all five at once. We tried it and we decreased cases of bleeding by 60 per cent,”she said.

Concerned by the slowing improvement to reach the Sustainable Development Goals for the survival of mothers or babies, Gates Foundation dedicated its 2023 Goalkeepers Conference to spotlight the need for urgent action to accelerate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) and reduce maternal and child mortality.

Countries have united behind the target to accelerate the decline of maternal mortality by 2030. SDG 3- Good health and wellbeing includes an ambitious target: “reducing the global maternal mortality rate (MMR) to less than 70 per 100, 000 births, with no country having a maternal mortality rate of more than twice the global average”.

The global MMR in 2020 was 223 per 100, 000 live births; achieving a global MMR below 70 by the year 2030 will require an annual rate of reduction of 11.6 per cent, a rate that has rarely been achieved at the national level.

Melinda French-Gates, Co-chair, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, says investing in women’s healthcare, particularly in high quality, affordable, equitable healthcare was a sure way to build a better future we all imagined.

According to her, there is a widening health gap and declining prospects for women globally.

“Maternal mortality is highly preventable, but sadly 800 women die from childbirth daily.

“Statistically, the day a woman gives birth is the most likely day she is to die,” she said.

According to her, brilliant researchers supported by the foundation have developed new interventions that can ensure more women have access to lifesaving care.

Noting that their work is opening up new, low-cost and mobile—avenues of preventing and treating deadly childbirth complications.

“When combined with better primary health care and more resilient health systems, these innovations have the potential to save thousands of mothers’ lives in LMICs around the world by 2030,” she said.

On innovations that are shaping maternal health, Prof. Bosede Afolabi, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Medicine University of Lagos, said anaemia wasn’t just a cause of postpartum hemorrhage but also an effect—one that could lead to long-term consequences ranging from heart disease to depression.

Explaining that a woman with severe anaemia was much more likely to bleed heavily during her delivery, noting that an anaemic women cannot survive the same volume of blood loss as nonanemic women.

Afolabi unveiled a one-time, 15-minute intravenous (IV) infusion of iron solution to assist anaemic women in Nigeria and beyond (an IV drip that can replenish women’s iron reserves during pregnancy—or even after pregnancy—and it could help treat severe cases of anaemia quickly and effectively.)

“This solution could mean not just saving women’s lives but also helping them lead better ones,” Afolabi said.

Unveiled also was a micronutrient supplement that fights malnutrition, noting that a malnourished mother translates to a malnourished child.

According to Afolabi, globally, more than one billion women and children lack access to good nutrition and healthy diets, with supplements and vitamins as common solutions that’s readily accessible in wealthy nations.

In contrast, Afolabi said that low-income countries lack access to such interventions, adding that Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) are interventions that could assist millions of pregnant women.

“They contain 15 essential minerals and vitamins including folic acid and iron; easy to use, low-cost and ready to scale. Most importantly, they work.

“In current studies, MMS significantly reduces the risk of low-birth weight by 12 per cent and very low-birth weight by 22 per cent, both of which are factors in infant deaths today.

“In today’s world, we tell women to take folic acid and iron, which are poorly tolerated and often thrown away and address only two nutrients.

“In my country- Nigeria and others, including Pakistan and Ethiopia, researchers are working hard to bring this support to all pregnant women.

“These supplements represent more than just help; it also represents hope because a solution is finally being tailored to solve malnutrition in communities that were overlooked for far too long,” she said.

Afolabi also unveiled a hand-held portable AI-enabled ultrasound machine that assesses pregnancy, noting that it’s cheaper, convenient to use and could mean more timely diagnostic and interventions and few risks to newborn and mothers.

“It’s inspiring to see more tools in research and testing that could have an impact in keeping mothers safe during childbirth. That’s the world that excites me and a world mothers deserve,” Afolabi said.

Similarly, Bill Gates, Co-chair, Gates Foundation, said more lives would be saved only if all mothers and babies have access to both quality health care services and the innovations spotlighted.

Gates noted that global under five-years child deaths was 4.6 million children, explaining that 2.2 million children die before they are one month old; 1.7 million die a week after birth, while one million children die the same day of birth.

Lamenting that there was little knowledge of the cause of neonatal deaths in the first 30 days of life, which made the foundation to establish Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS- an initiative of the foundation started in 2015 to learn more about the root causes of child death by taking blood and tissue samples from children who died.)

Gates acknowledged that over the past decade, the field of child health had moved faster and farther than he thought he would witness in his lifetime.

“We need to make the effort to take this knowledge and low-cost tools and do our best to get them out into the world so that in those fragile times of pregnancy and first two weeks that more kids grow up to live healthy and productive lives,” Gates said.

Gates, therefore, stressed that providing access to quality health care for mothers and babies to live long and healthy lives requires policy changes, political will, and more investment in women’s health and health care workers, including midwives.

Furthermore, Eva Nangalo, a midwife from Uganda, said that midwives are the backbone of maternal and child healthcare in many communities around the world.

Nangalo attributed the deaths of mothers and babies in Uganda to shortage of power, lack of equipment, absence of essential medicines and lack of transportation.

She called for inclusion of midwives in policymaking that borders on maternal and neonatal health, provision of modern equipment, facilities and medicines to save the lives of mothers and babies globally.

On efforts to scale up the innovations, Mark Suzman, Chief Executive Officer, Gates Foundation, emphasised it was ultimately the responsibility of the global, regional and national health authorities to integrate the innovations into health systems.

Suzman said that more than 50 countries are paying more in debt servicing than in health.

“You can’t achieve health outcomes or save over 800 women who die daily from preventable maternal deaths if you aren’t allocating into core human development – health and education,” he said.

He noted that Goalkeepers was about possibility, accountability, hope and commitments, stressing that the outlined innovations are concrete, implementable actions which are low-cost, save lives and could be rolled out fast.

“Yes, we are behind in the SDGs and it’s a tough half-time, but we can meet those goals by 2030, if we take actions now,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Goalkeepers initiative led by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is designed to inspire and incentivise thinkers and doers toward achieving the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

These Goals form an ambitious blueprint for reimagining a better future for all by 2030 and were agreed upon by all member states of the United Nations.

SSANU calls for immediate implementation of over 25% salary increment

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has called for the immediate implementation of 25 and 35 per cent salary increments for workers in tertiary institutions.

Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, National President, SSANU, said this in a communique issued on Monday in Abuja.

The communique was issued at end of the 45th regular National Executive Council meeting(NEC) meeting of the association held in University of Maiduguri, Borno.

He said NEC in session deliberated on issues of national importance as they concern members of the association.

He noted that NEC recalled the renegotiation of salaries for its members with the c hommittee led by the late Prof. Nimi Briggs that was at the final stage.

According to Ibrahim, SSANU had demanded for 700 per cent wage increase but the committee offered a 23.5 per and 35 per cent review for members.

“The recent announcement for approval of an increment of 25 per cent and 35 per cent for tertiary institution workers by the government which was circulated in the social media is not a product of collective bargaining agreement with the university based unions.

“While grudgingly acknowledging this slight increase that is yet to be officially communicated to the union, our universities and inter-university centers.

“SSANU urges both Federal and State Governments to immediately implement the increment and pay the arrears without further delay,”he said.

He added that NEC is also aware that a provisional sum of N100 billion had been budgeted for salary review of workers in tertiary institutions which is yet to be implemented.

The SSANU president also said that NEC expressed worries over withheld four months salary arrears of its members during the last nationwide strike.

He said that NEC described the action of the withheld salaries as insensitive and inconsiderate.

“It was obvious that SSANU complied with all legal provisions including giving adequate notices to the appropriate authorities.

“But were forced to embark on that strike due to government’s failure to honour her path of the agreement.

“SSANU therefore earnestly requests government to pay the withheld salaries without any further delay.

“This is considering the harsh economic realities currently faced by citizens in the country as government is aware, the value for the money has already been eroded by hyperinflation,”he added.

Ibrahim said NEC noted that the issue of Renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/SSANU Agreement was not only long overdue but that the exercise should be concluded.

“NEC in session agreed that now that ministers have been appointed, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman should hit the ground running as directed by the president.

“This will go a long way in addressing all industrial disharmony between the government and the university based unions, ”he said.

He said NEC also demanded that government should immediately reconstitute the renegotiation committee

with experienced university administrators and ensure they complete the assignment within a reasonable time.

GDP grows 0.01% from second quarter of 2022 to 2023

Angola’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 0.01 per cent from the second quarter of 2022 to the second quarter of 2023, the National Statistics Institute (INE) said Monday in Luanda.

According to the Rapid Information Sheet (FIR), referring to the National Accounts for the second quarter of 2023, GDP grew by 0.2 per cent from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2023, taking into account the seasonally adjusted series.

INE says that the quarter-on-quarter variation (seasonally adjusted) shows that the activities that contributed positively to the variation in GDP in the 2nd quarter of 2023 compared to the 1st quarter of 2023 were Agri-livestock and forestry 0.12%, fishing 0.18%, oil extraction and refining 1.84% and financial and insurance intermediation 0.25%.

Vectorial analysis

The FIR indicates that the Gross Value Added of agri-livestock grew by 1.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, making a positive contribution of 0.002 per cent to the total change in GDP.

The document explains that this variation was due to the increase in production of agricultural crops and livestock, with agricultural products varying by 0.16% and livestock products by 11.0% in this period in the sector.

The Gross Value Added of Fishing grew by 5.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, making a positive contribution of 0.003 per cent to the total change in GDP.

This growth was due to the increase in some large vessels and the entry of more communal aquaculture projects and larviculture centres. Industrial and semi-industrial fisheries account for around 70% of the sector, and in this period had a variation of 8.7 per cent.

The Gross Value Added of Oil fell by 2.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, making a negative contribution of 0.01 per cent to the total change in GDP.

Although there were positive variations in the production of the quantities extracted of natural gas, LNG and condensate, there was a drop in the extraction of crude oil, the latter having a weight of around 90 per cent.

This variation is the result of the stoppage of processing due to the gas leak at the “BL6P1-ST1” well in the Belize field, the activation of the high-pressure alarm in the storage tank at FPSO Kizomba A and the poor performance of some wells in the Ndungu field, as well as the lack of support for the water injection system.

The Gross Value Added of diamond mining fell by 21.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, making a negative contribution of 0.01 per cent to the total change in GDP.

This drop was fundamentally due to the fact that there was a negative variation in diamond and salt mining production of around 22.1% and 52.9% respectively. The two branches of activity account for more than 90 per cent of GDP.
