Policy strengthening will tackle unemployment- FG

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment believes there is the need to strengthen the country’s employment policy to tackle the challenges of mass unemployment, an official said on Wednesday.

The Director of Employment and Wages Department of the Ministry, Mr John Nyamali, made this submission at a two-day Employment Conference in Abeokuta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference had the theme: “Addressing Employment and Job Creation in Ogun State: Tapping into Global and Local Opportunities”.

It was organised by the Ogun Government in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Nyamali said the conference’s timeline underscores the urgency with which stakeholders must act to channel the efforts of youths in Ogun into productive ventures to contribute to the state’s development.

“The review of the National Employment Policy was borne out of the need to add strategies to further stimulate employment-intensive growth and raise the labour absorption capacity of the Nigerian economy,” he said.

The Director added that the reviewed policy was a veritable instrument in addressing the disparity between economic growth and low capacity within the economy and creating decent and sustainable employment.

“In avoiding pitfalls of past approaches, this administration is guided by the need to start on a sound footing by providing stakeholders with a framework that will guide all seeking to address the problem of employment.

“Government has come to the realisation that if millions of productive jobs are to be created to meet the challenges of mass unemployment, the internal robustness of employment policy must necessarily be strengthened.

“This is so because even if the policy environment is conducive, it cannot turn an outdated employment policy into an effective job-creation process.

“The employment trend in Nigeria indicates that, without a concerted effort to holistically tackle the problems of unemployment and under-employment from a policy perspective, the situation will get worse,” he said.

Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, in his speech, expressed concern at the alarming rate of unemployment and under-employment in the country.

Abiodun, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, added that youth unemployment has continued to pose weighty threats to the well-being of the society.

He said this was because the youth population comprises a substantial portion of the nation.

“It is a wake-up call for all gathered here today to consider the root causes of unemployment, develop actionable steps, make recommendations, and put up strategies to reduce unemployment in our dear state to the barest minimum, both on a short- and long-term basis,” the governor said.

In his remarks, the Team Leader, Skills Development for Youth Employment of GIZ, Dr Detlef Barth, noted that the conference was held at a crucial time.

He said this was in view of current realities of employment and job creation in Ogun.

“The objectives of the conference include fostering a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of employment and job-creation in the global context and current realities in Ogun.

“The conference has also sought to explore actionable recommendations to leverage as entry points towards sustainable job-creation in the state,” Barth said.

He further said the conference would create a sense of urgency for the setting up of an Employment Council to provide strategic oversight and coordinate multi-stakeholder collaborative initiatives.

“Throughout this conference, we will explore a wide range of topics through a mixed-method approach, including expert presentations, panel discussions, interactive sessions, and informal networking opportunities.

“We have also incorporated virtual elements to support hybrid formats, ensuring that everyone can participate, regardless of their location,” Barth said.

In his remarks, Dr Olu Aikulola, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, lamented that unemployment was assuming a “frightening” dimension globally.

”In view of this, Nigeria must pay attention and act responsibly.”

Aikulola, who is Chairman of the conference’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), added that governments at all levels should devise pragmatic policies in conjunction with the sector.

”This is in order to mobilise investment and create jobs.”

He urged informal youth groups, undergraduates, and upcoming entrepreneurs at the conference to see it as an opportunity to key into new innovations for tackling unemployment in the country.

Aikulola stressed the need to create a business-friendly environment for small businesses to thrive and attract investors, and also initiate programmes which would generate job opportunities.(NAN)

Families of fallen heroes to be included in cash transfer scheme- FG

The Federal Government has announced plans to include families of Nigerian fallen soldiers and members of the Nigerian Legion among the beneficiaries of its Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, disclosed this on Thursday in a statement by her Media aide, Mr Rasheed Zubair.

The minister was speaking when she paid a visit to the Ministry of Defence in Abuja.

Edu said the move was part of the desire of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to support the vulnerable ex-service men, widows and the dependants of fallen heroes.

She, therefore, sought for accurate data of the affected families of ex- servicemen so as to include them during the ongoing verification of the national social register.

Edu said further that the president had directed that the national social register be expanded to include those vulnerable groups to enable them benefit from the social intervention programmes.

”This is in line Mr President’s agenda and I am here to inform you that the programme has been expanded to accommodate retirees of this Ministry, especially deceased families.

“Government intends to support their wives to startup small businesses that will help their children stay in school and provide basic health care” she said.

She also announced the creation of Government Enterprise Empowerment Programe (GEEP) which aim to help small scale businesses in the country.

Edu, therefore, appealed to the ministry to provide adequate security cover for humanitarian workers while doing their work on the fields.

Minister of Information visits VON, preaches value reorientation, patriotism for progress

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris has called on Nigerians to imbibe value reorientation and patriotism to enhance unity and progress of the country.

Idris made the call when he visited Voice of Nigeria’s (VON) Headquarter on a working visit on Wednesday in Abuja.

The minister said, “It was not for nothing that President Bola Tinubu renamed the Ministry to Information and National Orientation,” adding that the National Orientation had given the ministry a new mandate.

“With that, the ministry has a new mandate which is to tell Nigerians that we need to now recover and dedicate ourselves to a nation that we all desire.

“You will agree with me that value orientation and patriotism among Nigerians is at its lowest.

“The President is passionate about rebranding Nigeria and the rebranding needs value reorientation. So the mandate is to ensure there is value reorientation.

“National Orientation is at the heart of the ministry and we need to start with the platforms under the ministry.

“I also think our diversity should be used positively for progress and development, ” the minister said.

According to Idris, the availability of honest and credible information is the bedrock of any united and peaceful society.

He explained that over the years, trust and confidence of the people had gradually eroded, especially for leaders and those in government.

“We have reached a level where Nigerians don’t believe in what their leaders tell them. So, the starting point for me is to restore that confidence, especially in government communication.

“And that can be achieved once you are honest, truthful, and patriotic in the cause for a better Nigeria.

“There is always a difference between a cup that is half empty and one that is half full. Let the cup always be half full in this country and once we imbibe that attitude, that will be the beginning of our unity and national rebirth.

“We need to believe in the country that we have. You can travel from Lagos to Maiduguri without an immigration officer asking you for your passport unlike if you were in another man’s country,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the Director-General of VON, Mr Osita Okechukwu, described the minister as a square peg in a square hole, adding that he came with a clean card.

“When he addressed Nigerians recently, he said as Minister of Information and National Orientation, he would tell Nigerians the truth. And transparency is the hallmark of democracy.

“We took off 62 years ago as an external radio of NBC, but have transformed into different nomenclature. We have 17 offices in 17 states, but our transmitters in Lagos and Abuja have aged.

“We are trying to source energy-saving transmitters for which funds have been approved already. Our studio was also put in place by the corporate service CBN.

“We are trying to run on two platforms – Short Wave and Virtual Radio – to have a presence in all parts of the world,” Okechukwu said.

According to the VON boss, the agency’s Establishment Act does not permit it to advertise.

“Therefore, minister, you have to be of help to us because we have some setbacks.

“We cherish the way you’ve handled government information so far. We are happy with you.

“All countries in the world have a fault line; anytime we are going off track, please let us know, because you are now the guardian.

“You are capable and have demonstrated that capacity,” Okechukwu said. (NAN)

Information Minister to support NAN on digital advancement to stay ahead of curve

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris says, the Federal Government will support the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to attain digital advancement and stay ahead of the curve to propagate government information with credibility.

Idris stated this during his working visit to the Agency’s Headquarters on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that NAN was Nigeria’s preeminent vendor of news content and conveying Nigerian news to the world.

The minister said his coming to NAN reminded him of the critical role that the agency had played and continued to play in the projection of the country ‘s values and national identity at home and abroad.

He pledged to work with the agency to strengthen its activities, adding that its vision entails commitment to excellence, technological advancement and continued dedication to the principle of journalism.

Idris said, “I know that modernisation is key to your operations here and to the operations of every platform.

“So, we will be paying attention to the modernisation process that is happening across the world and within the industry.

“On your part, continue to fulfil your role in conveying and providing high quality and timely news to traditional, electronic, and digital media in Nigeria and across the world.

“Also, you have the responsibility to help the country propagate the ideas and achievements of President Bola Tinubu and his administration as encapsulated in the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“What I have observed from my familiarisation visits so far is that technological advancement and modernisation are a necessity in journalism. Modernisation and innovation are going to be the key areas of my work.”

According to Idris, the ministry will bring all public media institutions under it, especially NAN, not just up to date, but to ensure that they stay ahead of the curve.

The minister charged the management and members of staff of NAN to continue to push themselves to evolve so as to remain relevant in the ever-changing time in the industry.

He reiterated that it was important for NAN staffers to evolve especially in journalism to stay ahead of time.

Idris said, “I want to thank all the hardworking staff of NAN for what they are doing.

“We assure you that we will prioritise your welfare within the resources available so that you can continue to fulfill your mandate.”

Speaking earlier, the Director overseeing the Office of the Managing Director, Mr Abdulhadi Khalil, said that NAN felt particularly thrilled when the minister recently said that he would tell Nigerians the truth and nothing but the truth.

“Our joy stemmed from the fact that your strong philosophy is in sync with the NAN’s philosophy: ‘Tell Nigerians the truth at all times.

“Since NAN was established in 1976 and it started operations in 1978, it has remained focused on serving Nigerians and indeed the whole world, through searching for and publishing the whole truth and only that.

“Currently, we have about 2,500 clients and serve them through our diverse services that include text general news features, photos, video and audio news, SMS news, PR wire news and many other services.

“To handle these services effectively, we have offices in all the states and district offices in most senatorial districts. We also have 12 zones with two in each of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones,” he said.

Khalil stated that NAN also had many foreign offices, adding, “but with the dearth of funds, only the New York office is currently functional.

He added, “With the advent of social media, there has arisen a huge challenge to NAN to do even more, since its monopoly of being first with the news is under threat.

“The challenge means that we have to scout for more modern equipment so as to compete favorably in the ever-competitive media space.

“Added to this is the need to train our personnel to handle this new equipment and use them optimally for the benefit of the country.

“We have prepared a document to the Honourable Minister which contains all these requirements.

“We shall be happy if the honorable Minister is able to go through it as we shall soon start knocking your door with concerns.”

NAN reports that the minister was conducted round the facilities in the agency by Khalil, accompanied by other management staff. (NAN)

Two Non-Govermental Organisations, the Eye Care Aid Foundation and Vision spring, have given out 10,000 eye glasses to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with support from the ACT Foundation.

The Programme Manager, Eye Care Aid Foundation, Mr Diamond Abah, speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, said the gesture was to give strong advocacy on protecting the eyes.

“Eye care is passionate about taking care of the eyes of people. As individuals if you cannot see, you cannot read and if you cannot read you cannot be progressive in life.

“Readers they say are leaders and we want to make sure that people are able to see and read.

” In this advancement of technology, everybody is looking at the screen either the phone screen, TV screen. Those light coming from the screens affect the eyes so we must be able to provide reading glasses to people so they will be able to see,” he said.

Abah called on the government to support through the provision of basic logistics to be able to move round to deliver on their mandate.

“We started this journey since March 2023 and we have been going from one community to another in FCT and the government can do a lot by giving us means of mobility because we have glasses already.

Sen. Ubah defects to APC

Sen.Ifeanyi Ubah (YPP Anambra) on Thursday defected from the Young Progressive Party (YPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ubah said this in a letter read by President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio at plenary.

He said that he decided to join the APC because of some irreconcilable differences in the YPP.

“I am writing to formally notify and inform you that due to irreconcilable differences, I have resolved to move from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“As a dedicated politician and a representative of the people, I believe that this move has become exigent owing to the growing need and call from my constituents to align myself with a political party that best reflects my values and aspirations.

“After careful consideration and due consultations with my family, constituents, political associates and critical stakeholders and after a thorough evaluation of the political landscape in Nigeria.

“I have come to the realisation and conclusion that the All Progressives Congress is better suited to champion the ideals and principles that I hold dear,” he said.

Ubah said that the APC’s commitment to good governance, economic development and social progress were part of reasons for his defection.

“I have been the national leader of the YPP for several years and I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences it availed me.

“However, as our nation faces numerous challenges which have trickled down to my constituency, it is crucial for me to align myself with a party that has the capacity to address these issues effectively for the betterment of my constituents and constituency.

“I am particularly impressed by the “Renewed Hope” initiative of President Bola Tinubu and I found it needful to join the train so as to initiate my Senatorial District into the laudable vision,’’ he said.

Ubah said he looked forward to working collaboratively with colleagues in the APC to bring about positive change in Nigeria.

“While thanking you Mr President for your usual and kind cooperation, please accept the assurances of my distinguished regards,”Ubah said.

Senate thereafter adjourned plenary until Oct 17, following death of Rep. Abdulkadir Danbuga (APC-Sokoto State).

2023 IDGC: Out-of-school children seek access to quality education, empowerment

Some out-of-school girls on Wednesday, appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to increase access to quality education and empowerment programmes to enable them to achieve their full potentials in life.

The children made the call in Abuja, at an event organised to commemorate the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child by an NGO, Tabitha Cumi Foundation (TCF).

The event was organised under the NGO’s Flashlight Actions on Girls Safety (FLAGS) project being funded by the UN Trust Fund.

The project was designed to assist 750 marginalised girls in FCT, Nassarawa and Niger states on Gender-Based Violence and empower them to function effectively in the society.

A 17- year out-of-school girl, Kelechi Kugbo, a beneficiary of FLAGS, appealed to the government at all levels to educate parents on the benefits of girl-child education.

“As a girl, we pass through challenges in the aspect of education. Most parents feel they have the right to train the male child instead of the female child.

“This idea of inequality in education has done more harm than good. The government can help by telling parents to take their girl child the way they take the male child.

“Government should take the education of citizens more seriously, particularly girls in rural communities,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Miss Amazing Dubem, also urged the government to invest in increasing access to quality education and put stringent laws in place to ensure that parents send their children to school.

Duben added that the FLAGS projects had impacted on her positively, adding that the project equally built her confidence and self-worth.

Similarly, Mrs Godiya Danjuma, who facilitates the communication between TCF and the marginalised girls in communities, appreciated the organisation for their support.

Danjuma said that before TCF’s intervention, the challenge was mainly that the girl child was being abused and the survivors cannot report or confront anybody because nobody would support them.

“But after TCF came to our community and trained us, people are now aware and anytime there is a case, we speak out. We now have confidence and self-esteem.

“We are calling on the government and other stakeholders to continue to support ongoing efforts to end GBV in our society,” she said.

Earlier, Mrs Tayo Erinle, Executive Director, TCF, explained that the day of the girl child was to further highlight the challenges affecting the girl-child, especially out-of-school girls from underserved communities.

“This event was put together to celebrate our girls. They are our treasure and each year we leverage on the international day of the girl child to raise our voices for the Nigerian girls.

“We work with girls in underserved and marginalised communities.

“We feel their plights and do our best to see that we alleviate them, through providing access to education, health, financial empowerment, and leadership training.

“We work with different stakeholders to respond to issues of GBV and teach the girls how to build self-confidence.

“We need to invest in our girls, wherever we find them, to enable them to become leaders tomorrow,” she said.

Also, Ms Chioma Chukwuma, Programme Officer, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), reiterated their commitment in rendering free legal services to vulnerable women and girls to ensure they get justice.

Cbukuam said that the objective was protection, preservation, and the promotion of the rights of women.

“We do this through advocacy, sensitisation and provision of free legal services for women whose rights are being threatened, and those whose rights have been violated,” she said.

Mrs Obiageli Kechere, Assistant Chief Programme Officer, National Orientation Agency reiterated the agency’s commitment and the need to create more awareness on girl-child education, especially at the grassroots.

Mr Segun Olorunfemi, National Secretary, Child Protection Network in Nigeria, reiterated their commitment in ensuring the rights of children were protected and that no child in Nigeria was neglected or abused.
