Windhoek:Ovaherero Traditional Authority Chief Mutjinde Katjiua has reaffirmed his commitment to pursue restorative justice for the Ovaherero and Nama communities. He vowed that this effort will continue regardless of changes in Germany's political landscape.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Katjiua criticized Germany's proposed reparations package of N$1.3 billion, arguing that it is insufficient compensation for the genocide committed by German colonial forces between 1904 and 1908. He described the sum as merely "a token of a token friendship" and emphasized the importance of securing meaningful redress.

Katjiua called on the Ovaherero community to strengthen its unity, underscoring the need for a collective voice to ensure their demands are taken seriously. He stressed that their commitment to justice should remain steadfast, irrespective of Germany's political shifts.

German Left Party Member of Parliament Charlotte Neuhäuser, present at the briefing, expressed solidarity with Katjiua's objectives. She pledged support for the unconditional recognition of the genocide, a formal apology, land restitution, and substantial reparations for survivors and their descendants.

Katjiua's remarks followed his return from Berlin, where he engaged with German parliamentarians. He also met with diplomats in Botswana and South Africa to advocate for the recognition of the genocide and meaningful reparations. Additionally, he collaborated with Neuhäuser in preparation for the German Bundestag debate scheduled for October 14, 2026.
