COVID:19 – Namibia records 1 334 new cases, one death

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia on Sunday recorded 1 334 new COVID-19 cases and one death, taking the country’s death toll to 3 583.

In the daily update issued on Monday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 5 313 results and represented a 25.1 per cent positivity ratio, with a gender distribution of 662 females and 672 males aged between three days and 90 years.

The Khomas Region recorded the highest number of cases at 670, followed by Erongo with 328, Otjozondjupa 102, Oshikoto 50, Hardap 37, Omaheke 36, ||Kharas 33, Kavango East 27, Kunene 20, Ohangwena 15, Oshana 11 and Omusati five.

Among the confirmed cases are 65 learners, 12 teachers, 15 students and 27 healthcare workers.

A total of 33 cases have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 114 are fully vaccinated while 1 160 or 87 per cent of the new cases are unvaccinated.

Shangula also reported that 70 new recoveries were recorded, bringing total recoveries in the country to 127 439.

The number of active cases on Sunday increased to 9 437 of which 198 were hospitalised and 16 admitted to the intensive care units. Nine of the hospitalised cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 23 are fully vaccinated, while none of the cases in ICU has been vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 18 December, a total of 397 150 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, representing 26.5 per cent of the target population including 1070 children aged 12 to 17 years. A total of 100 269 had received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, with 235 020 having received two doses of other vaccines.

He further said 335 289 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 22.3 per cent of the target population, adding that 1 849 people have received their third dose of the vaccines.
