Windhoek: The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Indileni Daniel, has called on the public, businesses, and institutions to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment and combating climate change.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Daniel, in a media statement to commemorate World Environment Day on Thursday, highlighted the close relationship between environmental health and Namibia's future prosperity, stating that the nation's future is intertwined with the health of its environment. She emphasized that Namibia's land, water, forests, wildlife, and ecosystems play a crucial role in sustaining livelihoods, supporting economic growth, and defining the national identity.
Daniel pointed out that climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and land degradation continue to pose threats to both people and the environment, necessitating a stronger and more united response. She stressed that these continuous threats should bolster a collective response.
The minister also highlighted that nature provides practical solutions to many environmental challenges, such as protecting forests, conserving water resources, restoring degraded landscapes, and safeguarding wildlife. She underlined that environmental protection is a shared responsibility that goes beyond government efforts.
Daniel urged every citizen, community, institution, and business to play their part, emphasizing that the decisions made today will shape the Namibia left for future generations. She called on all Namibians and visitors to support efforts in protecting the country's natural heritage to ensure a sustainable future.
This year's World Environment Day was observed under the theme 'Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future.'
