Windhoek:DPR Korea weightlifters made a powerful entrance at the Asian Games, securing both women's gold medals available on the first day. Notably, Ri Song Gum, a three-time champion, set three new world records.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Ri, aged 28, competed in the women's 49kg category, achieving a snatch of 94kg, a clean and jerk of 121kg, and a total of 215kg, all marking new world records. This victory marked DPRK's first gold of the Games.
Ri expressed her joy after the medal ceremony, attributing her success to the support of her people. When questioned about her potential participation in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Ri indicated a willingness to move up a weight class with a smile to her coach.
In the same event, Mirabai Chanu from India won silver with a 198kg total, while Indonesia's Luluk Wijayana took bronze with 191kg.
Later in the day, Kang Hyon Gyong added to DPR Korea's triumph by winning gold in the women's 53kg category, achieving a total lift of 223kg and setting five new Asian Games records. Kang expressed her determination to continue improving and aim for world records in future competitions.
China's Zhao Jinlan earned silver in her debut international meet with a total of 218kg, and Thailand's Surodchana Khambao secured bronze with 214kg.
