Nkurenkuru:Construction on Phase 1B of the Nkurenkuru Sports Centre is set to begin, backed by a N$22 million budget. This phase will focus on developing core sports infrastructure over the next seven months at the existing facility site.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the completion of Phase 1A involved N$10 million for feasibility studies, design, and initial construction. The Managing Director of Kerii Architects and Associates, Javier Kerii, outlined that Phase 1B will establish functional sports infrastructure and lay the groundwork for future expansions.

The proposed work includes a mini pavilion with 1,000 seats, an irrigation system, kikuyu grass for the soccer field, area lighting, and compacting and levelling the soccer field. Perimeter fencing, spectator seating, and enhancements to existing courts are also planned. Although additional features such as floodlighting and expanded ablution facilities were proposed, they will be considered in future phases due to budget constraints.

Kerii emphasized that Phase 1B will focus on essential elements to make the facility usable for organized sports and community activities. The work is scheduled from October 2026 to April 2027.

Kavango West Regional Council Chairperson and Nkurenkuru Constituency Councillor, Fillipus Tenga, expressed the region's support for the project but highlighted the need to revisit some design elements. He suggested increasing the pavilion capacity to accommodate approximately 20,000 people, subject to technical and financial assessments. Tenga also called for reviewing seating arrangements, aligning stormwater drainage with town systems, and enhancing regional consultation to ensure the project meets long-term needs.
