Manila: The Philippines' Commission on Elections (Comelec) officially proclaimed the 12 winners of the senate race, including two loyal supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte, in Monday's midterm elections. Reelected Senator Christopher Go, a close aide to Duterte, topped the polls, while fellow Duterte ally, Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, secured the third position. Other candidates endorsed by Duterte who emerged victorious include Senator Imee Marcos, Representative Rodante Marcoleta, and Camille Villar.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Camille Villar, a "guest candidate" on the Duterte slate who also has the backing of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., was counted among the winners. The top 12 also included candidates supported by Marcos, such as Erwin Tulfo, Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, and former senators Panfilo Lacson and Vicente Sotto.
Two candidates not associated with Marcos and Duterte, former Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino and former Senator Francis Pangilinan, rounded out the 12 senate seats. Representative Tobias Tiangco, campaign manager for the Marcos bloc, conceded that there were setbacks in Mindanao, a region known for its support of Duterte. He attributed the poor performance to backlash over the February impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a May 13 Facebook post, Duterte's former presidential spokesperson and chief presidential counsel, Salvador Panelo, described the election results as a "thunderous repudiation" of the Marcos administration. He claimed the vote demonstrated public support for the Dutertes and a rejection of "vindictive politics."
Monday's midterm election involved the election of more than 18,000 positions, including 12 senators, members of the House of Representatives, and various provincial and town officials.
