Envisioned Henties Bay reservoir and pump station approved

A NamWater reservoir, pump station and town office is envisioned for Henties Bay, NamWater Project Manager Lazarus Muhimba has confirmed.

Muhimba during a recent tour by a NamWater delegation to the Erongo Region as part of its regional stakeholders’ engagement on project updates, as well as future plans with regards to water supply in the region, said the project whose planning commenced in 2008, will be constructed in two phases.

“Phase 1 will be a pipeline, which is the most critical part of this project as the existing pipeline is not sufficient to supply water for the demand during peak time. The existing pipeline ranges between 100-150 centimetres and we have decided to replace this pipeline with a 250-centimetre which will still go all the way to our existing infrastructure in town as we currently do not have a reservoir here,” Muhimba noted.

The town planner added that there are currently two small reservoirs at the town with a combined capacity of 1 600 cubic metres which are not sufficient. A 5 000 cubic metre reservoir will be constructed during the first phase.

Muhimba said the process of determining how much water will be needed by the town in a certain number of years, has been completed, as well as the development stage where preliminary designs regards to pipelines are also done.

The designs of the reservoirs and the pump station are still in progress.

“We have engaged the municipality on acquiring the land and in principle, we have an approval of two hectares, but Council needs to approve these minutes so that that resolution is passed down and the sooner there is approval, the earlier we kick off with the project; around after four months,” he said.

Meanwhile, Henties Bay Strategic Executive for Infrastructure, Town Planning and Technical Services, Dismon Kambatuamasa, noted that the council realises that the reservoir will be for the town’s advantage and the land will be approved.

“Now that the Management Committee resolution has been passed, we will carry out the process internally and we will give NamWater our commitment with resolutions within three months,” Kambatuamasa said.
