Windhoek: The European Union (EU) has partnered with the UNDP Namibia and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on an initiative to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability. The Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Namibia, Ana Beatriz Martins, signed a contribution agreement with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and government representatives for the Good Governance Project 2025-2029.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the EU has awarded a contract of N.dollars 20 million to the UNDP for the implementation of the five-year project, with the ACC as a beneficiary. Martins stated that the EU's commitment to the initiative aligns with Namibia's national development agenda, notably the Fifth National Development Plan (NDP5) and the Harambee Prosperity Plan II, both emphasizing transparent and accountable governance as essential for sustainable development.

UNDP Namibia's resident representative, Alka Bhatia, emphasized the importance of the project in addressing governance challenges and fostering a culture of integrity. She pointed out that corruption is a complex issue impacting democracy, the rule of law, and public trust globally. Bhatia highlighted that the project aligns with Namibia's upcoming NDP6, Vision 2030, and the United Nations Sustainable Cooperation Development Framework 2025-2029, aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

The project aims to strengthen the ACC's management and technical capacity and effectively implement the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Action Plan. Erna van der Merve, ACC's deputy director general, described the initiative as a historic milestone supporting the ACC's efforts to combat corruption in Namibia. She noted that it would help reduce corruption and bribery, thereby promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
