California: An F-16C fighter jet from the U.S. Air Force crashed on Wednesday morning during a training mission, with the pilot successfully ejecting from the aircraft.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the incident occurred at approximately 10:45 am local time, when a "Thunderbird pilot ejected safely from an F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft during a training mission over controlled airspace," as stated by the U.S. Air Force.
U.S. Air Force Sgt. Jovante Johnson informed the Los Angeles Times that the jet was part of the Air Force Thunderbirds, an aerial acrobatic demonstration team stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. He noted that the cause of the crash is currently under investigation, as mentioned in an email to the newspaper.
The crash site was near China Lake, a community situated about 270 kilometers north of downtown Los Angeles, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
