Washington: Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted in relation to the disclosure of sensitive information on Thursday, only days after U.S. President Donald Trump urged relevant actions against him. Comey was charged with making a false statement and obstruction of a congressional proceeding by a federal grand jury.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Trump described Comey in a post on social media as "one of the worst human beings this country has ever been exposed to." On September 20, in another post, he pressured Attorney General Pamela Bondi to accelerate the investigation into Comey, one of the president's prominent critics. Bondi stated, "No one is above the law," emphasizing that the indictment reflects the Justice Department's commitment to holding those accountable who misuse positions of power to mislead the American people.

The charges against Comey are linked to his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2020, where he claimed he had never authorized media leaks about the Russia investigation or a separate probe into Hillary Clinton. However, a 2018 Justice Department report indicated that Comey's deputy, Andrew McCabe, asserted that Comey had allowed him to disclose information to the press. The report also noted that McCabe made several false or misleading statements.

Comey denied the charges in a video posted on Instagram, stating, "My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump, but we couldn't imagine ourselves living any other way." He expressed confidence in the federal judicial system despite his concerns for the Department of Justice.

The Washington Post reported that the White House recently replaced the previous top prosecutor in the case with Bondi, one of Trump's former personal attorneys. Comey, who served as FBI Director from 2013 to 2017, was appointed by former President Barack Obama and dismissed early in Trump's first presidential term. Since leading the FBI's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and potential ties to the Trump campaign, Comey has been a contentious figure for Trump.

In 2018, Comey published A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, where he criticized Trump as "morally unfit to be president."
