Ondangwa: The annual Gabriel Taapopi Secondary School (GTSS) tournament was officially launched on Monday, with the sporting event scheduled to take place from 16 to 18 May 2025. Speaking at the launch, Principal Sakaria Eelu highlighted the tournament's growth and unifying role since its inception in 1997 for schools in the northern part of Namibia.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Eelu stated that the school initiated the tournament to provide a platform for engagement between different schools and the wider community. 'We want to create lasting partnerships between schools, and at the same time boost the local economy of the town and region at large during the tournament,' he said.
Eelu said the school has invested about N.dollars 40 000 into the event and received over N.dollars 20 000 in pledges during the launch. The tournament will feature five sports codes: boys and girls football, netball, boys and girls basketball, volleyball, and chess.
Tournament ambassador and former Brave Warriors player, Benson Shilongo, a former learner of GTSS, encouraged all sports enthusiasts to attend and support the participating players. He emphasised that the tournament serves as a valuable platform for talented young individuals to showcase their abilities. 'It is a fantastic arena for the many talented young individuals in our region to display their skills and passion for their chosen sport; come and witness the future stars in action,' he urged.
