Windhoek: Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, emphasized the opportunities and prospects for Namibia's emerging oil and gas sector during the fourth edition of the Namibia Oil and Gas Conference held in Windhoek.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Mshelbila engaged in discussions alongside Economic Association of Namibia (EAN) Chairperson Jason Kasuto, focusing on developments in the global gas industry and how Namibia can maximize its economic opportunities. Mshelbila underscored the importance of transforming Namibia's oil and gas potential into tangible value for Namibians, southern Africa, Africa, and the global market.
Mshelbila highlighted the ongoing efforts, including the Namibia Oil and Gas Conference, as crucial steps in preparing Namibia for the development of its oil and gas resources. He pointed out that local content is a vital component of these preparations, stressing its importance in the sector's development.
Given Namibia's relatively small population, Mshelbila suggested that the country should explore export opportunities while leveraging the broader economic benefits from its natural gas resources. He noted that the value of natural gas goes beyond its immediate economic worth, emphasizing its potential multiplier effect.
Furthermore, Mshelbila discussed Africa's projected population growth, indicating that the continent's population is expected to rise from about 1.5 billion to 2.5 billion by 2050. He linked this growth to increased demand and opportunities for energy development across Africa.
Kasuto remarked on Namibia's significant progress in developing its oil and gas industry, likening it to a bamboo tree beginning to emerge above the surface. He noted that the conference is timely, especially following the recent Cabinet approval of Namibia's long-awaited local content policy, which provides a roadmap for industry stakeholders.
The three-day conference, themed 'Setting Out Namibia's Framework for Success,' features masterclasses and panel discussions. These focus on independent operators and governments, empowering Namibia's future energy leaders, and local content leadership. The conference is set to officially open on Wednesday and conclude on Thursday.
