Zambezi: Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has assured the people of the Zambezi region that the government will continue to ensure that every village has a borehole for drinking water, food production, and for livestock. Speaking at the annual Lusata Cultural Festival of the Mafwe Traditional Authority held at the traditional headquarters of Chinchimani in the Zambezi region, Ngurare emphasized that every borehole drilled by the government remains government property regardless of whose land it is drilled on. This is in line with the Water Resources Management Act 11 of 2013. He further explained that when any community requires drinking water, access to such a borehole will not be restricted, and in areas where water is brackish, mini desalination plants will be installed.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the Lusata Cultural Festival marked the conclusion of the cultural festivals cycle in the Zambezi region, which Ngurare attended as a guest of honour and keynote speaker. During discussions with Chief Litunga George Simasiku Mamili VII of the Mafwe Traditional Authority, Ngurare addressed concerns raised by the Chief, including food production and the region's potential to become a breadbasket. However, challenges such as access to market, lack of necessary agricultural implements, and the need for accelerated borehole drilling across Zambezi and other regions were highlighted as obstacles.
Ngurare assured Chief Litunga George Simasiku Mamili VII and other traditional authorities of the government's commitment to addressing these issues. He reiterated that the government would continue efforts to ensure that every village has a borehole and emphasized the importance of providing all Namibians, especially those in rural areas and informal settlements, with access to dignified sanitation facilities. Furthermore, he outlined the government's commitment to providing potable water, sanitation, education, health facilities equipped with necessary medicines, decent housing, roads, rural development, wealth, prosperity, peace and stability, empowerment, and an enabling environment for all citizens to realize their potential.
