Ulaanbaatar: An unusually heavy snowfall has struck Zavkhan province in western Mongolia, the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring reported Monday. The snowstorm affected several soums, including Uliastai, Yaruu, Ider, Aldarkhaan, Tsagaankhairkhan, Shiluustei, and Otgon, over the course of Sunday and Monday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the precipitation in these areas averaged 25-30 centimeters, with snow depths reaching up to 60 centimeters in mountainous regions. The agency reported that temperatures in these areas are expected to fall to minus 2 degrees Celsius following the snowfall. Authorities have issued warnings to the public, with a particular emphasis on nomadic herders and drivers, urging them to take extra precautions against potential hazards.
Zavkhan province is known for its harsh climatic conditions, being one of the regions in Mongolia that regularly experiences some of the nation's coldest winter temperatures. Mongolia's climate is characterized by long, frigid winters and short summers, adding to the challenges faced by residents in these weather conditions.
