Windhoek: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a vibrant welcome from the Indian community in Namibia on Wednesday, as traditional songs and colourful dances lit up his first-ever visit to the country.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the welcoming ceremony took place at a local hotel in Windhoek, where more than 200 Indian nationals gathered for a spirited meet-and-greet session with the visiting Prime Minister.

Modi, who is undertaking a one-day State visit, was officially received by National Planning Commission Director General Kaire Mbuende and Minister of International Relations and Trade, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi. Also in attendance was India's High Commissioner to Namibia, Rahul Shrivastava, who accompanied the Prime Minister throughout the engagements.

Later in the day, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will host Modi at State House for a formal ceremony, where the two leaders are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

Modi's itinerary also includes a visit to Heroes Acre, where he will be welcomed by Defence and Veterans Affairs Minister Frans Kapofi and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony.

His visit will conclude at Parliament, where he will be received by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, before his departure around 18h00.
