Opuwo: Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security Lucia Iipumbu on Tuesday inaugurated the Kaoko-Otavi Correctional Facility Clinic near Opuwo in the Kunene region. Iipumbu, in her remarks, highlighted that the facility, situated in the Opuwo Rural Constituency, brings healthcare services closer to inmates and the surrounding communities.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Iipumbu expressed appreciation to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for prioritising development in remote areas and thanked the Kaoko-Otavi community for embracing national projects. 'We are committed to bringing prosperity to this area, and that prosperity will also benefit the community,' she said.

However, Iipumbu issued a stern warning on safety and conduct when visiting the clinic, saying the residents should respect the law and follow correctional security regulations at all times. 'This is a correctional facility. When you access the clinic, please avoid unnecessary movement. Some inmates have conditions, including mental illness. For your safety, keep your distance and listen to the officers,' she cautioned.

The minister further introduced officers deployed to the facility, explaining that many come from the surrounding communities and are well-placed to liaise with residents. She encouraged the public to cooperate with security personnel and participate in agricultural initiatives planned for the area to enhance food self-sufficiency.

Speaking at the same event, Commissioner-General of the Namibia Correctional Service, Raphael Tuhafeni Hamunyela, said the clinic is a result of collaboration between government, traditional leaders, and community members. "Unity is the foundation of national development," he said.

Governor of Kunene Region, Vipuakuje Muharukua praised the milestone, saying it is a symbol of renewed trust in government. 'Today, we have a government run by our own children. There is no time for misgivings, only time to improve our lives,' he said.

The clinic has a total of three nurses.
