Windhoek: Windhoek Mayor Ndeshihafela Laranja has called for urgent action to protect cyclists and pedestrians, highlighting the need for greater awareness, respect, and use of safety gear on Namibia's roads. Speaking at the handing over of cycling gear by the City of Windhoek to members of the public, Laranja stressed that efforts to promote non-motorised transport will remain ineffective unless motorists' attitudes towards cyclists and pedestrians change.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Laranja pointed out that many Namibians rely on walking and cycling out of necessity, but fear and trauma discourage wider participation. She added that accident statistics have created anxiety among pedestrians and potential cyclists. Laranja urged institutions and the public to prioritise awareness campaigns, emphasizing that drivers have a negative mindset towards cyclists and pedestrians, failing to recognize them as road users.
MVA Fund Senior Manager for Accident and Injury Prevention, Ruben Uupindi, echoed these concerns and emphasized the importance of safety gear. He revealed that 77 cyclists were involved in collisions with vehicles, resulting in one fatality and 72 injuries from 01 January to 21 September 2025. Sixty-six per cent of these incidents occurred in just two regions, including Khomas, and he called on recipients of donated safety gear to use it and spread awareness.
Uupindi urged cyclists to wear helmets, reflective clothing, and protective gear to minimize injuries, pointing out that a helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injuries by up to 70 per cent. 'We don't want to meet you at accidents, so please use this safety gear whenever you're cycling,' said Uupindi.
Both Uupindi and Laranja called for a collective effort to change mindsets and ensure safer roads for all, warning that efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable transport will fall short without broad-based support. The handing over of the cycling gear formed part of Zero Emissions Week 2025, which concluded on Monday and was aimed at promoting climate awareness, sustainable mobility, and greener urban living.
