Mexico city: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the country is exploring measures to enhance its energy independence and decrease its reliance on the United States. In her daily press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized the significant dependence on U.S. natural gas imports, which are currently "very cheap," and underscored the necessity for Mexico to move towards energy self-sufficiency.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Sheinbaum highlighted that despite the goal of reducing reliance, existing import contracts, some of which extend up to 20 years, represent binding commitments that cannot be immediately terminated. The president mentioned that Petroleos Mexicanos, the state-owned oil company, has established a working group in collaboration with the Mexican Petroleum Institute to explore environmentally responsible alternatives.
Sheinbaum stated that any conclusive decisions will require public input and consideration. She also noted that the exploration of alternative methane sources, such as landfills and biomass, is underway to diversify Mexico's energy production capabilities.
