Kavango west: The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), in collaboration with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), conducted community outreach activities in the Kavango West Region ahead of the commemorations of World Radio Day and International Safer Internet Day. The delegation engaged residents of the Maporeza community, as well as learners at Kanuni Haruwodi Combined School and Kahenge Combined School, with discussions centred on the role of radio and responsible digital practices.
According to Namibia Press Agency, practical guidance was provided to members of the Maporeza community on establishing a community radio station, including information on equipment requirements, licensing procedures, programming, and sustainability. Officials also shared basic cybersecurity tips with residents and learners, covering password safety, recognising online scams, reporting harmful content, and protecting personal information online.
Learners took part in interactive activities such as quizzes and role-plays, during which they practised news reading and presenting as radio hosts. MICT Deputy Director for Media Liaison Services, Elizabeth Amagola, said the outreach initiative underscored government's commitment to inclusive communication. Amagola stated that radio remains one of the most trusted and accessible media in communities, providing reliable information, education, and a platform for public participation.
World Radio Day is observed annually on 13 February to recognise radio's contribution to creativity, education, expression, and entertainment. This year, Namibia will commemorate World Radio Day under the theme 'Radio and Artificial Intelligence' on 14 February at the Mururani Veterinary Checkpoint in the Mankupi Constituency. The national event will bring together government representatives, industry experts, and members of the public to discuss how radio can harness artificial intelligence while maintaining editorial standards and public trust.
The outreach initiative also formed part of preparations for International Safer Internet Day, to be marked under the theme 'Smart tech, safe choices - exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.'
