Windhoek: The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) on Thursday received the first shipment of essential medicines and clinical supplies as part of the direct procurement initiative.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the event in the capital marked a significant step in the ministry's efforts to strengthen the nation's health system. Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Esperance Luvindao, emphasized the ministry's commitment to reducing drug shortages in health facilities. She stated, "It is possible to reach a point where one does not pick up a newspaper and read about drug shortages in health facilities every other day. That is what we are working towards because it directly translates to a better quality of life for all citizens."
The ministry's dedication to securing quality medicines at better value for all Namibians was highlighted by the arrival of this first shipment from Pfizer. Dr Luvindao noted that this delivery signifies the beginning of continuous shipments expected in the coming weeks and months.
This milestone marks the first time medicines have been procured directly from manufacturers, aiming to restore stock levels at the Central Medical Stores to over 80 percent. Dr Luvindao assured that more shipments are anticipated, with the next expected to arrive by 29 October 2025.
