Okahandja: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has announced that negotiations between the Namibian Government, the affected communities, and the Federal Republic of Germany regarding genocide and reparations are ongoing. Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks during the Ovambanderu commemoration, which marked 130 years since the death of Ombara Kahimemua Nguvauva, who was killed by German colonial forces at Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed hope for a resolution, stating, "Negotiations are ongoing. It is our hope and wish that an understanding will be reached soon." She highlighted that Parliament has designated 28 May as Genocide Remembrance Day to honor the victims of the extermination order issued by General Lothar von Trotha against the affected communities.

The president launched Genocide Remembrance Day in 2025, and she noted the significance of the nation coming together to mark 28 May across the country this year. The day aims to honor and remember the victims and affected communities while promoting national unity, reconciliation, and awareness about the history, impact, and lessons of the 1904-1908 genocide committed during German colonial rule.

Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the importance of solidarity with the affected communities and supporting a dignified, just, and lasting resolution to the genocide issue. She called for unity under the banner of "One Namibia, One Nation" and urged the commemoration to be a unifying moment for all communities, encouraging Namibians to set aside differences and embrace national unity and common purpose.

The president also condemned tribalism and regionalism, advocating for peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and solidarity among all Namibians. She urged the nation to honor the countless known and unknown heroes and heroines who stood against injustice throughout the country's history, much like Ombara Kahimemua Nguvauva is honored.
