Windhoek: The National Assembly on Tuesday approved the appointment of Gerson Sindano as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia. The decision was reached after a quorum of 49 members voted in favor, under the supervision of Deputy Speaker Phillipus Katamelo. Notably, the vote proceeded with the absence of all opposition members, save for United Democratic Front Member of Parliament, Nico Somaeb, who remained present.According to Namibia Press Agency, the approval followed an attempt by Affirmative Repositioning MP Job Amupanda to halt the appointment process through legal means. In July 2026, Amupanda sought an urgent interdict from the High Court of Namibia to prevent the National Assembly from confirming Sindano's appointment. His legal argument centered on the lack of access to critical selection documents necessary for informed decision-making by the lawmakers.Amupanda's court application stressed the necessity of disclosing documents such as the selection committee's interview minutes, ca ndidate scoresheets, the committee's recommendation to the President, and the President's written nomination to Parliament. He argued that without these records, members could not adequately fulfill their duties or ensure compliance with statutory and constitutional obligations.Despite these efforts, Amupanda withdrew the application last month, allowing the National Assembly to proceed with the vote, resulting in the unanimous appointment of Sindano as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia.
