Windhoek: The remains of liberation struggle heroes Festus Nehale and Simon Petrus Niilenge will be buried at Heroes' Acre on Monday, following the repatriation of their mortal remains from South Africa on Friday. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah received the remains of the two former Robben Island political prisoners at Hosea Kutako International Airport, together with 84 ancestral human remains that had been kept at Iziko Museum in South Africa.According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah stated that Nehale and Niilenge will be accorded a dignified reburial alongside their comrades Eliaser Tuhadeleni, Hafeni Immanuel Shifidi, Nduuvu Fillemon Nangolo, and Nathaniel Maxuilili. Their tombstones will be unveiled on Heroes' Day on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.Nandi-Ndaitwah described the ceremony as a solemn occasion of national reflection and pride, emphasizing the fulfillment of a promise to bring home Namibians who sacrificed their lives for the country's freedom. She expressed that the repatriation rep resented much more than the end of a long journey, highlighting it as an act of restoration of dignity, identity, and belonging.The president noted that Nehale and Niilenge were among Namibians imprisoned for their political involvement in the liberation struggle, incarcerated on Robben Island alongside political prisoners from Namibia and South Africa. The arrival of their remains signifies the restoration of dignity and the return to the land they loved.Additionally, the return of the 84 ancestral human remains, which had been separated from Namibia for decades, marks an important step in addressing the country's history. Nandi-Ndaitwah mentioned that these remains will remain in the care of the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture for further historical realities.The head of State concluded that the return of the fallen heroes serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds of solidarity, shared history, and cooperation between Namibia and South Africa.
