Otjiwarongo: Minister of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), Emma Theofelus, announced the government's decision to construct four new network towers in the Otjozondjupa Region this financial year. Theofelus made this announcement at a consultative meeting focused on information and communication technology infrastructure development for Otjozondjupa, held in Otjiwarongo.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the new towers will cost the government over N.dollars 8 million, with each tower costing approximately N.dollars 2 million. The construction will be carried out by the Mobile Telecommunication Company (MTC) to enhance communication services in the rural areas of Tsumkwe and Omatako constituencies. The minister highlighted that challenges related to site identification, the vastness of Otjozondjupa, and the costs involved have delayed the project at the Dobe border post, Tsumkwe settlement, Kano Vlei, and Osire areas.

Additional regions set to benefit from similar projects include Kavango East, Kavango West, Oshikoto, and Ohangwena, which currently have less than 50 percent network population coverage. MTC infrastructure senior official, Erastus Tuhafeni, noted that MTC already operates 48 network communication towers in Otjozondjupa, providing 98 percent voice coverage. The company plans to upgrade from 2G and 3G internet systems to 4G and 5G.

Telecom engineer Mathew Mushongo discussed the progress of Telecom's nationwide infrastructure revolution. However, he raised concerns about the high rate of underground cable theft and vandalism of physical communication infrastructure in Otjozondjupa, suggesting the introduction of a new law to severely punish those involved in such activities. The meeting was also attended by Governor Julius //Khamuseb and other local authority councillors.
