Windhoek: Founding President Sam Nujoma’s nephew, David Nujoma, has said he will remember his uncle as a man who dedicated his whole life to the wellbeing of Namibians, both before and after independence.
According to Namibia Press Agency, David Nujoma, during an interview on Sunday at Nujoma’s residence, emphasized that everything was about Namibia and for Namibians for the late Founding Father. “He wanted Namibians to reach a high level of welfare and well-being. He went through a lot that has been documented all over. As a family man, he was caring, loving, and giving, and he didn’t just give to family, but to everyone,” he stressed.
He further noted the late president cared for the less privileged and spoke out against gender-based violence. “He spoke of big things, his vision for Namibia and I believe some of what he expressed is still to come. In his DNA there was nothing but Namibia and its people. Remember he also advocated for the reconciliation policy where he said Namibia is big enough to accommodate everyone and that we should learn to live together in harmony,” he added.
Also speaking to Namibia Press Agency was Namibia’s former deputy minister of defence, Philemon Malima, who described the late Nujoma as the ‘Jesus’ of Namibia, stating that without him the country would not have gained its independence. “He was the commanding chief during the liberation struggle and if it was not for him, this country could have not gotten independence. His legacy will remain forever in the hearts and minds of Namibians. We have lost a father, a commander-in-chief and our prophet who wanted this country to be independent and peaceful. He also reminded us to ensure we take care of our resources and that every Namibian enjoy these resources,” said Malima.
Nujoma is survived by his wife, Kovambo, his children Utoni, Sacky, and Usuta, as well as his siblings Julia, Hiskia, and Noah. He also leaves behind grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nujoma passed away on Saturday night at a Windhoek hospital at the age of 95.
