Olympic Champions Garnbret and Gines Lopez Shine as IFSC Climbing Worlds Commence in Seoul

Seoul: The 2025 IFSC Climbing World Championships kicked off in Seoul, showcasing top performances from Olympic champions Janja Garnbret of Slovenia and Alberto Gines Lopez of Spain. Both athletes topped their qualification groups in the Lead discipline, setting a strong precedent as they seek to secure another world title.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Garnbret and Gines Lopez were the sole competitors to achieve double tops across their two routes. This accomplishment highlights their exceptional form and determination to enhance their climbing accolades.

In the women's competition, Erin McNeice from Britain was the only other climber to top a route, securing second place in the qualification. Annie Sanders from the United States claimed third place. China's Zhang Yuetong delivered a noteworthy performance, finishing fifth and reflecting on her initial climb's challenges. Zhang expressed her thoughts on the IFSC official website, noting her lack of preparation and adjustment to the first route, but improved on the second one.

Zhang's compatriot, Luo Zhilu, also advanced to the semifinals, finishing in 21st place. In the men's category, Japan's Neo Suzuki and Satone Yoshida tied for second place behind Gines Lopez, with rising star Sorato Anraku joining five other Japanese climbers in the semifinals.

Chinese climber Pan Yufei, who made history by winning a World Cup title in Bern, Switzerland, secured a semifinal spot in 15th place. South Korea celebrated as four climbers advanced to the semifinals, with Lee Do-hyun leading the group in seventh place. The crowd witnessed a thrilling moment when Kwon Kibeom clinched the final qualifying spot in 24th place, edging out Britain's reigning world champion and Paris 2024 gold medalist, Toby Roberts.

The Boulder qualifications are slated for Tuesday, with the Lead semifinals and finals scheduled for Friday.
