Keetmanshoop: Boxing in Omaheke needs an urgent overhaul, the region's head of delegation to the National Boxing Championship, Fonso Tjatindi, has said. The championship was held in Keetmanshoop over the weekend and out of the 12 boxers from Omaheke, only four boxers advanced to the second round. Two of those athletes, David Nuuyoma and Elias Mwetufa, eventually progressed to the semifinals in the lightweight and light-middleweight divisions, respectively. The team's campaign was further hampered by technical setbacks, as four fighters were unable to compete due to weight complications.According to Namibia Press Agency, Tjatindi, who also serves as the Omaheke regional sports coordinator, described the results as understandable given the limited infrastructure in the region. 'We only have two boxing clubs in the Gobabis and Otjinene constituencies, that's not enough considering the number of constituencies we have in the region,' he said. He urged all constituencies to establish local clubs to ensure a stea dy pipeline of talent for national competitions. To address the shortage of active fighters, Tjatindi announced plans to begin hosting boxing tournaments across all seven constituencies. He emphasised that the talent exists within the region, but a lack of formal avenues and training facilities continues to stifle progress. He highlighted the severe shortage of boxing equipment and adequate training spaces as primary obstacles to growth. The head of delegation appealed to the Ministry of Sport and the corporate sector to intervene and support grassroots development. He stressed that without proper investment in equipment and facilities, the region would continue to struggle against better-equipped rivals. Beyond infrastructure, Tjatindi also touched on the psychological and administrative support for athletes, and said official send-offs and regional attire for traveling teams would serve as motivation.
