Ondangwa: The Ondangwa Town Council has reached practical completion of Phase One of its N$14 million Wastewater Treatment Plant project, a development expected to significantly reduce sewer overflows that have affected residents of Oluno, Ondangwa Extension One and surrounding areas. The project commenced in April 2025 and forms part of the council's efforts to modernise its sanitation infrastructure and improve wastewater management in the town.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Phase One included the construction of a new embankment, installation of a palisade fence, rerouting of sewer lines and the decommissioning of old sewer ponds. Ondangwa Town Council Public Relations Officer Petrina Shitalangaho said completion of the first phase marks a major milestone in addressing the long-standing sewer challenges experienced by residents.

"The practical completion of Phase One of the Wastewater Treatment Plant is a significant achievement for the council and the residents of Oluno and Ondangwa Extension One. For years, residents have lived with the fear and uncertainty of sewage water overflowing into their homes during heavy rains. Today, we are pleased that critical interventions have been put in place to substantially reduce these risks and provide peace of mind to our communities," she said.

Shitalangaho said the project will also benefit nearby institutions, including the Correctional Services facility, which has previously been affected by sewer pond overflows. "As we approach the rainy season, the completion of this phase gives the council confidence that residents and institutions in the affected areas are better protected. This project demonstrates the council's commitment to investing in infrastructure that safeguards public health, protects the environment and improves the quality of life of our residents," she said.

The project follows sewer spillages experienced earlier this year after heavy rains and the collapse of a vandalised sewer pond wall caused sewage to overflow into residential properties in Oluno and Ondangwa Extension One, raising public health and environmental concerns.
