Windhoek: Brazil and the United States are preparing for a new round of in-person talks on U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods, likely in late September, Brazilian officials said Monday. Brazilian Development, Industry, Trade and Services Minister Marcio Elias Rosa noted he is expected to meet U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during the G20 ministerial meeting scheduled to be held in the United States from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1. "The conversation is open, and Brazil is willing to negotiate," Elias Rosa told reporters, emphasizing Brazil's commitment to defending the interests of its companies and workers while maintaining dialogue.According to Namibia Press Agency, the upcoming discussions follow the resumption of talks after an August phone call between Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump. Elias Rosa highlighted Brazil's stance against what it perceives as unjustified unilateral tariffs. However, he clarified that Brazil does not plan to respond by closing its eco nomy or engaging in a trade war. "Brazil believes in multilateralism, dialogue and negotiation. We will not abandon those principles," he stated.The United States currently imposes additional tariffs on certain Brazilian products, resulting in a combined tariff rate of 37.5 percent due to measures adopted through different trade investigations. According to Brazil's Development, Industry, Trade and Services Ministry, the new U.S. measures affect 23.1 percent of Brazilian exports to the United States to varying degrees.Brazilian exports to the United States amounted to 17.4 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of 2026, marking a 13 percent decline from the previous year. Furthermore, the U.S. share of Brazil's exports dropped to 9.4 percent, the lowest level since 1997.
