Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Monday described technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a key driver of Namibia's economic transformation as she sent off 17 youth to represent the country at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China.
According to Namibia Press Agency, during the send-off at State House, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that Namibia is actively building an inclusive, resilient economy aimed at creating sustainable opportunities, strengthening local industries, and empowering citizens to drive national growth. "Technical and vocational education and training sits at the very heart of this national ambition. As Namibia advances into strategic emerging sectors of green hydrogen, oil and gas, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and digital technology, our success depends heavily on a skilled workforce that is innovative, adaptable, and globally competitive," the president stated.
She reiterated the government's commitment to empowering TVET institutions to equip Namibians with practical skills, technical expertise, and adaptive capabilities aligned with labor-market needs. "These institutions are tasked with equipping Namibians with the practical skills, technical expertise, and adaptive capabilities that align with the evolving needs of our labor market," she said.
Nandi-Ndaitwah also called on institutions responsible for human-resource development to conduct regular skills audits and labor market analyses to anticipate and address skills gaps, ensuring the workforce meets national and global demands. Addressing the competitors, she highlighted that their participation in WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 demonstrated that TVET is not a backup plan, but rather an important key to the country's economic transformation. "I urge you all to compete with confidence and courage. Do not be intimidated by the scale of the global stage or the established records of other nations. Stand tall and remember your identity," Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
"We are sending you off today as 17 ambassadors of our nation, carrying with you the hopes, aspirations, and confidence of a country that believes in your capabilities to shine. Absorb and innovate," she added.
The biennial WorldSkills Competition brings together young skilled professionals from around the world to compete in a range of occupational disciplines. The 48th edition, to be held in Shanghai from 22 to 27 September, is expected to attract about 1,400 competitors from 70 countries.
