Oshana Records Over N.dollars 357 Million in Infrastructure Investment

Oshakati: The Oshana Region has recorded infrastructure investments amounting to approximately N.dollars 357.3 million during the 2025/2026 financial year, with major projects in water, roads, electricity, health, and education reaching significant milestones.According to Namibia Press Agency, Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge delivered his State of the Region Address (SORA) on Monday, stating that N.dollars 108.1 million of the allocated capital budget had been spent by the end of the fourth quarter under the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).In the water and sanitation sector, the Ondangwa Wastewater Treatment Plant reached 95 percent completion during its first phase, creating 45 temporary jobs for local youth. This includes the construction of the 10-kilometre Shingunguma Branchline in the Uuvudhiya Constituency and the rehabilitation of water pipelines serving several communities.Iipinge mentioned that strategic bulk water projects implemented by NamWater, such as the refurbishment of the Calueq ue-Oshakati Canal, replacement of the Ogongo-Oshakati Pipeline, and upgrading of the Oshakati Water Purification Plant, are collectively valued at nearly N.dollars 1 billion. These projects are expected to strengthen long-term water security in the northern regions.On road infrastructure development, Iipinge highlighted that the construction of the Okatana-Amutanga-Omulathitu-Onanime road has reached over 62 percent completion. The upgrading of the Oshakati-Ompundja road commenced under the Low Volume Seal Standard programme. The Olunho-Uukwiyuushona road reached 99 percent completion, improving access and mobility for communities.He stated that nearly N.dollars 40 million was invested in road maintenance, with nine priority roads identified for upgrading to bitumen standard at an estimated cost of N.dollars 2.1 billion.In terms of electricity infrastructure expansion, the Evululuko Extension 14 electrification project, valued at N.dollars 15.6 million, is expected to provide electricity to about 420 ho useholds. The Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (NORED) also invested N.dollars 6.5 million in a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to strengthen electricity distribution, while public lighting infrastructure was expanded in Ondangwa and Ongwediva.Meanwhile, the construction of a five-megawatt solar power plant in Oshakati reached 80 percent completion, creating 169 temporary jobs.In the health sector, the Oshana Regional Management Team office building was completed and inaugurated at a cost of N.dollars 18.1 million, while the Ompundja Clinic was completed and officially opened. At Oshakati Intermediate Hospital, a new intensive care unit was completed, and renovations to hospital facilities continued. Progress was also reported on the planned Ondangwa District Hospital, with feasibility studies completed, environmental assessments finalized, and consultants appointed to begin detailed designs.Education infrastructure projects worth approximately N.dollars 32 million were implemented across the region, including the construction of classrooms, science laboratories, computer laboratories, libraries, administration blocks, and pre-primary facilities.
