Oshikoto Region, Namibia – Councillors of the Okankolo and Nehale Lyampingana constituencies in the Oshikoto Region have raised concerns about the poor condition of roads in their areas, which could impede development activities.
According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), Okankolo constituency councillor, Hans Nambambi, in an interview with Nampa on Monday, identified several roads in urgent need of repair. Nambambi pointed out the Okankolo to Onkumbula road, stretching 47 kilometers, which was slated for an upgrade in 2001 but has seen no progress to date. The deteriorating condition of this road, which serves ten government schools, has led to frequent inquiries from the community, making Nambambi feel the pressure of unmet expectations. He also highlighted the problematic state of the Onyati and Onkumbula road, characterized by rocks and potholes, which restricts access to basic services. Nambambi noted instances where trucks delivering drought relief food or water got stuck on these roads. He also expressed concern about delays in transporting inmates from Onkumbula police station to court due to the poor road conditions.
Nehale Lyampingana constituency councillor, Joseph Shilongo, described their roads as mere paths created by the community, lacking proper tarring or gravel. Despite these challenges, Shilongo acknowledged the government’s efforts in constructing various low-volume seal standard roads in the constituency, which he believes will eventually lead to more development. However, he also raised concerns about the quality of water from drilled boreholes, which is too salty for livestock consumption.
Eengodi constituency councillor, Protasius Neshuku, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing maintenance of the main road leading to his area but emphasized the need for upgrading the smaller roads that connect to villages.
These councillors’ statements underscore the importance of road infrastructure in rural development, highlighting the need for timely maintenance and upgrades to facilitate access to essential services and opportunities.
