Oshakati: The Oshakati Town Council has warned residents and business operators in the Ekuku and Oshakati North (Ehenye) areas to stop illegal construction and business activities or face enforcement measures, including the demolition of structures and legal action.
According to Namibia Press Agency, in a public notice issued on Wednesday, the council said it had observed a rise in unauthorised construction and development activities in the two areas, prompting intervention to ensure compliance with town planning regulations.
The illegal activities, as noted in the notice, include the construction of buildings without approved plans, the erection of corrugated iron and other informal structures without council approval, the establishment and operation of tuck shops and other businesses without the necessary consent, and the encroachment on or unauthorised occupation of land reserved for public purposes, roads, services and future developments.
The council reminded residents that, in terms of the Local Authorities Act of 1992, the Oshakati Zoning Scheme and other applicable regulations, no person may commence construction without approved building plans, establish structures without the required approvals and land-use consent, or occupy and develop land contrary to approved zoning and planning requirements.
Residents and business operators have been given until 31 July 2026 to comply with the council's requirements.
The notice adds that failure to comply within the stipulated period could result in the issuance of compliance notices, the demolition and removal of illegal structures, the closure of unlawful business operations, the confiscation of building materials where applicable, and legal action in terms of the relevant legislation.
