Otjiwarongo: More than 400 residents of Otjiwarongo on Friday joined forces to remove litter across 16 suburban areas in the town as part of the local authority's mass clean-up campaign. Leading the 2026 clean-up campaign organised by the Otjiwarongo Municipality, Mayor Leonard Simushi commended residents for demonstrating commitment in keeping their town clean.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Mayor Simushi highlighted the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining cleanliness. He stated, "Your presence clearly demonstrates your commitment in keeping your town clean. Cleanliness is a shared responsibility because the municipality can clean the town using its machinery, but those efforts will be in vain if residents continue dumping waste in areas already cleaned." Simushi also urged residents to instill a culture of cleanliness in their children to help preserve Otjiwarongo's environment and maintain its appeal as one of Namibia's gateway towns, strategically located in the centre of the country.

Otjiwarongo Chief Executive Officer Mberipura Hifitikeko pledged the municipality's continued commitment to keeping the town clean. He assured, "We will keep this town clean, and this clean-up campaign will become a permanent feature on the municipality's annual calendar. We are equally committed to ensuring that our gardens and parks are well maintained."

Municipality traffic officer Michael Katunohange coordinated the campaign, dividing the more than 400 participants into 16 groups, each assigned one of the town's identified suburbs. The clean-up started at 07h00 and was scheduled to conclude at 12h00 on Friday.
