Windhoek: The Roads Authority (RA) announced plans on Thursday to install speed humps at specific sections of the B1 Western Bypass and the A1 Road within the Khomas Region. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve pedestrian safety in these areas.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the decision comes in response to a rise in pedestrian-related accidents along these routes, some of which have unfortunately resulted in fatalities. The planned installations will span the B1 Western Bypass between the Independence Avenue Interchange near Katutura State Hospital and the Lafrenz Interchange. Similar measures will be applied to a section of the A1 Road between Prosperita and the Windhoek Country Club Resort.

The RA stated that this road safety measure has been spearheaded by Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi. The primary aim is to reduce vehicle speeds, heighten driver alertness, and enhance pedestrian safety in high-risk zones. Construction is set to begin on Friday, with lane-by-lane closures implemented to manage traffic flow during the installation.

The RA assures that effective traffic management measures, including warning signs and traffic accommodation strategies, will be in place throughout the construction period to ensure the safety of both road users and workers. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, adhere to traffic signs and instructions from officials, and reduce speed as necessary when driving through the affected areas.

The RA emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility and called for public cooperation during the project's implementation, while also apologizing for any inconvenience caused.
