Swakopmund:The refurbishment of the National Marine Aquarium in Swakopmund is anticipated to begin in 2027. This comes three years after the facility was closed due to structural issues.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda, stated that a feasibility study was completed and approved by the Ministry of Works and Transport in May 2026. As a result, qualified service providers have been appointed to create detailed technical designs, including architectural and engineering drawings, as well as a Bill of Quantities. These will form the technical basis for procuring and appointing a contractor for the refurbishment.
The aquarium was closed in November 2023 when the ministry found that its condition required significant refurbishment to ensure safety and functionality. The refurbishment timeline has shifted from earlier plans that were initially set for the 2025/26 financial year.
Reports from June 2025 indicated that repairs were imminent, with earlier assessments revealing that prolonged exposure to seawater had compromised the concrete structures and reinforcing steel of the facility. Initial plans for refurbishment included replacing concrete pillars, repairing the main tank and associated structures, and upgrading various operational areas.
The aquarium, which opened in 1995, saw 48,098 visitors in 2022. The ministry has yet to announce a reopening date, as it hinges on the progression of ongoing design, procurement, and construction processes.
