Namibian bantamweight boxer Fillipus Shaanika will on Sunday challenge for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan African title against South African boxer Rofhiwa Nemushungwa in Durban.

The two boxers will square off for the vacant title at the King Misuzulu International Boxing Tournament, which is taking place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and will feature special guest Floyd Mayweather Jr from the United States of Ameria.

Shaanika boasts a record of 10 fights – eight wins, one loss and one draw, while his South African opponent has a record of 23 fights – 13 wins, eight losses and two draws.

A statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday by Shaanika’s boxing stable, the MTC Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy, quotes the boxer who has been undefeated in his last three fights as saying he wants to keep his record clean and aims to put his hands on the continental belt.

“This will be the first time I fight outside of Namibia. I am excited to go fight in Durban at such a huge event. I am 100 per cent prepared and ready for the fight. I want to assure boxing fans that I will leave the ring with this title,” he said.

Shaanika added that credit should be given to his stable sponsors Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) and his coaching staff for the opportunity to fight in front of icon Mayweather Jr.

“I could not have asked for more and the title will be my Christmas present,” said Shaanika.

The boxer and his coaching team of Siegfried ‘SBK’ Kaperu and Nestor Tobias left for Durban, South Africa on Wednesday.
