The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Kavango East Region have embarked on Operation Basadi, focusing particularly on raising awareness on issues of gender-based violence.

NamPol Kavango East crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu told Nampa on Wednesday that the operation, which started Monday and ends Friday, is meant to combat and reduce gender-based crimes and promote child protection.

Responsiveness to other crimes is also included as a build-up to the festive season.

According to the deputy commissioner, during this time the police have experienced that some parents drink recklessly at bars and shebeens – leaving very young children vulnerable to abuse and neglect.

Kanyetu said all police stations in the region embarked on the special operation on Monday and it is being carried out by both female and male officers.

“So far no serious crimes were reported, greatly due to the operation. However, a media statement on the overall performance of the operation will be given on Friday,” he said.

He said the operation is focusing on creating visibility and enhancing cooperation between the police and its stakeholders.

The operation was also set to look at ways to improve service delivery in crime prevention plus highlight crimes such as rape, murder, kidnapping, common assault and human trafficking.

The deputy commissioner meanwhile urged the police officers to execute their functions without fear and to ensure that their presence is felt in the operation arena, as long as they align themselves with the mandate.

Operation Basadi is a Southern African Development Community (SADC)-wide law enforcement operation introduced in Namibia nine years ago.
