Sri Lanka Allocates 150 Million USD for Hospital Projects

Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has earmarked 45 billion rupees, equivalent to approximately 150 million U.S. dollars, for the completion of stalled hospital construction and development projects over the next two years, as announced by a minister on Monday. Minister of Health and Mass Media, Nalinda Jayatissa, made the announcement during a gathering in the Eastern province.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Minister Jayatissa also revealed plans to bolster the healthcare workforce by recruiting 1,900 health support staff within the coming two months. Additionally, nearly 1,000 new nurses are expected to join the healthcare system over the next eight months, aiming to enhance the capacity and efficiency of healthcare services across the country.

Further initiatives announced include a program set to launch in April 2026, which will provide motorcycles to health workers involved in field duties, facilitating their mobility and ability to service remote areas. Jayatissa also highlighted the government's future financial commitments, stating that the 2026 budget will allocate more than 550 billion rupees, approximately 1.83 billion U.S. dollars, to the health ministry, underscoring the government's dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure and services.
