Colombo: Sri Lankan police have reported the identification of 58 gangs involved in organized crime, along with approximately 1,400 associates linked to these groups. Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya disclosed this information during a press conference, highlighting the impact of these gangs on public safety.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the ongoing activities of these criminal gangs have resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals this year, with 17 victims shot and five hacked to death. The violence associated with these gangs poses a significant challenge to law enforcement efforts.
The press conference also revealed that 11 current and former members of the police and armed forces have been arrested in connection with some of these incidents. Among those detained are two policemen, one soldier, one airman, and seven army deserters, showcasing the complexity of the issue and the involvement of security personnel.
Organized crime continues to be a pressing concern in Sri Lanka, prompting the government to intensify efforts to combat such activities. In a bid to enhance public safety and address these challenges, the government has announced plans to recruit 10,000 new police officers. This initiative aims to curb crime, reduce traffic accidents, and bolster overall public security.
