Swakop businessman allegedly fatally shoots man at bar

A 54-year-old Swakopmund businessman was on Monday detained after allegedly shooting dead a man who had been involved in a fight at his bar.

According to a crime report issued by Erongo Police Community Affairs Commander, Inspector Ileni Shapumba on Tuesday, the incident took place on Monday at Bingo Bar in the DRC informal settlement at about 17h00.

It is alleged that the deceased, identified as 31-year-old Ndahangetate Frans, tried to rob a customer who was buying a crate of beer at the bar.

According to the police, Frans tried to grab the customer’s bicycle from him, which led to the commotion.

“The suspect (businessman) intervened and asked the deceased to leave the man alone. Frans and his friends, all of whom were armed with knives, got angry at the suspect and cornered him against a nearby shack.”

The suspect pulled out his pistol and fired a single warning shot into the air to scare them off, and two of the attackers retreated. Frans however stormed the suspect from the back, causing the suspect to shoot him below the left lower ribs, Shapumba explained.

The man was rushed to the Swakopmund State Hospital in a taxi by family members, but succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Police investigations continue.
