Swakopmund:Two individuals implicated in a significant insurance fraud case have been granted bail of N$20,000 each by the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court. The case involves alleged fraudulent claims based on fake deaths.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Operi Zamuee and Doreen Zullnolla Zamuee appeared before Magistrate Sally Salionga. The state decided not to oppose their release on bail, and Doreen, who had initially abandoned her bail application, was included in the bail decision with conditions set by the state.

Operi Zamuee must remain within the Swakopmund district unless she notifies Detective Inspector Kaninas. She is required to reside at her Mondesa home and report to the Swakopmund Police Station every Friday. Additionally, she must surrender all travel documents and refrain from applying for new ones until the case concludes.

Doreen Zamuee, a resident of Windhoek, is restricted from leaving the Windhoek district without informing authorities. She must stay at her home in Kleine Kuppe and report to the police station weekly. Both accused have been ordered not to influence or interfere with witnesses or the ongoing investigation.

The court has postponed the case to 28 September 2026 for plea entries under Section 119 of the Criminal Procedure Act. The investigation began in July when Operi was arrested after being found alive despite records showing she died in a 2021 car accident. An insurance payout of N$3 million was reportedly made based on her alleged death.

Further investigations revealed the case's connection to a broader scheme involving multiple fraudulent claims and policies with Old Mutual Namibia. Court documents state the scheme caused an actual loss of N$5.1 million, with a potential loss of N$1.8 million prevented when another claim was blocked. Doreen was linked to the investigation and initially faced charges in the Katutura Magistrate's Court before the case moved to Swakopmund. Investigations are ongoing.
