Welwitschias retain 24th spot on world rankings

The Namibia Senior Men’s Rugby Team, the Welwitschias, have retained their 24th position on the world rankings according to World Rugby’s latest report released on Monday.

Namibia last played a competitive international fixture in November 2021, when they defeated Zimbabwe and Brazil in the World Rugby/Rugby Africa Stellenbosch Challenge Tournament.

Namibia has been hovering between the 23rd and 25th world ranking spot since the 2019 Rugby World Cup where they failed to win a single match, losing to South Africa, Italy and New Zealand before their match against Canada was cancelled.

Namibia remains the second ranked African country behind South Africa, which are the top-ranked nation in the world, ahead of New Zealand in second place.

France displaces England from third place, with Ireland completing the top five.

The biggest movers are Spain who moved from 17th to 15th.

Meanwhile, the Women’s team, which recently got back to playing competitive matches, is ranked 55th in the world and 11th in Africa.

There are 61 women nations ranked and 109 men teams.

The Namibia ladies last played Zambia in November 2021, when they lost 75-05 at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek.
