Swakopmund: Xinhua News Agency has reaffirmed its long-standing cooperation with the Namibia Press Agency (Nampa) and local media houses, underscoring its commitment to telling Namibia's and Africa's stories in a balanced and authentic manner. Xinhua Deputy Editor-in-Chief Jin Zheng highlighted that the agency's Windhoek Bureau, established in 1990 shortly after Namibia gained independence, has played a vital role in reporting the country's nation-building efforts, socioeconomic development, and growing international engagement.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Jin was speaking on day three of the Effective Communicators' Conference at Swakopmund on Friday. 'Our bureau in Windhoek actively engages with Chinese enterprises operating in Namibia, reporting on their investments, infrastructure projects and social responsibility initiatives,' Jin said. He added that Xinhua maintains a strong working relationship with Nampa through regular news exchanges, joint coverage of major events and mutual logistical support.
Beyond Nampa, Xinhua collaborates with other local media organisations such as the African Youth Newspaper and Namibia Daily News, sharing content and coordinating event coverage. 'Together, we form a network that connects Namibia with China and the broader international community,' Jin noted.
On Africa's portrayal in the media, the deputy editor-in-chief criticised the persistent stereotypes presented by some international outlets. 'A study by Africa Practice and Africa Future found that negative media coverage costs Africa an estimated US dollars 4.2 billion annually in lost investments, funds that could educate 12 million children and immunise over 73 million others,' he explained.
To meet Africa's growing media needs, Zheng said Xinhua has embraced new media and digital technologies to reach younger audiences. Africa, with its 1.4 billion people and a median age below 20, is one of the fastest-growing regions for mobile internet adoption. In 2021, Xinhua's Africa Regional Bureau launched Hello Africa, an English multimedia service that integrates text, photos and video to tell local African stories and highlight Africa-China relations.
'Communication is not just about sharing information; it is about connecting people, cultures and ideas. Xinhua remains committed to truthful, fair and constructive reporting to break stereotypes, build mutual understanding and foster trust between Africa, China and the world,' Jin concluded.
